Star Wars Rewatch

It did feel like getting trolled.

I saw it on a long weekend trip to New York, before it came out in the UK, along with this weird-sounding movie called The Matrix the next day. Fully expected Star Wars to be the clear winner there, but wound up profoundly disappointed with it and hugely impressed with The Matrix.

I get everyone not liking the Phantom Menace. I was a Star Wars lover since I saw the movie at 5 in 1977. I was in the forum trenches defending Lucas to the end.

I am not deluded into thinking it is High Art or anything, but I really don't care about that sort of thing. All I know, is with the exception of Mediclorians I really liked the Movie and the entire Prequels. Lucas Star Wars in hindsight I realize worked much better for me than what they are putting out now with the exception of Projects by Favreau and Filoni.

I wish George Lucas kept Star Wars.

I think TPM could have been decent minus the badly dubbed English king fu movie accent blockade aliens voice, jar-jar, baby anakin, killing darth maul.

Ot had some cool scenes. Execution was off.

It made sense at least.

One of these days I'm going to sit down and rewatch the sequels back to back. Enough time has passed now that I can watch it with fresh eyes.

When I did that with the prequels... Phantom Menace was certainly the best of the three to be fair, but, wow, that's a seriously low bar. Revenge of the Sith was just bad. Like jaw droppingly bad. Padme dies because... she's sad? This bad assed princess that risks her life, rules an entire planet, tops herself because of a boy? Yeah, that's just awful.

Cool fight sequences notwithstanding, the second two prequels do rank down with The Acolyte in my "Basement of Bad Star Wars".

Fairly common take.

Lucas can't do dialog or love scenes. Great world building.

If you ask me, the real story of Anakin Skywalker is what turned him from a helpful, relatively cheerful little sprout in Phantom Menace to the creep in Attack of the Clones. And that's the story that isn't told.
