Trailer Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Season 1) trailer

You guys know we are on a D&D site...well...originally a 3e D&D site, and despite my love for the creators of D&D, there is some history that some would notate regarding some actions they had taken previously, some things that went on at the offices, and things far worse than anything dealing with HP in rumor and circulation (at least via rumor, and what some hold as facts whilst others refute such things).

Misogyny? check. Sexism? Check. Racism? Check. Drugs? Check. Demonic references? Check.

Actual things that we probably aren't allowed to talk about here because of age restrictions and such in regards to somethings that happened? Also Check.

That's all in the past you say? They even have disclaimer's up regarding the old stuff on DM's Guild?

Well...in 2014 Hasbro had some pretty heavy discrimination going on, and it wasn't simply against LGBTQI+...it was against those who weren't male. Speak up about it? Such as a woman speaking up about it in regards to how women were treated...fired.

Exploitation of foreign workers in foreign factories where they cannot be prosecuted by US law? Check (how you feeling about those 5e books now???).

Things are not always as black and white as we try to pretend they are. This thread is not about these things though. It's not about bringing the dirty little secrets to light. This show, regardless of whether I like it or not, has PoC representation. That's a big one for me.

This show, whether I end up liking it or not, employs hundreds of people who can make a living doing this type of stuff.

This show, whether I watch it or not, will have those who are fans or not fans who have no idea about certain aspects people wish to discuss about those who perhaps should not be named in the thread (and I wonder if anyone is getting this reference besides me in regards to HP).

We can discuss all forms of D&D on this site, regardless of origin and in some ways, that has a much dirtier past than what we have here.

So, a creation can be separate from the creator (or we are all hypocrites if one references all the dirty rumors about many of the creators of D&D, most of which I don't ascribe to, but I am aware exist) in our hobby, and if we can't separate creator from creation, perhaps give allowance to those to have a thread to discuss such things.

I feel like you missed that the When We Were Wizards podcast was widely listened to and discussed by this community. I don't think many ENWorld regulars are unaware of the problems with TSR and we certainly don't shy away from discussing the issues at WotC.

I'm not sure that calling people hypocrites because they don't want to put money in JKR's pocket, given that she's been very explicit about what she intends to do with that money, is called for.

So.... here's what we're going to do.

You may discuss the new Harry Potter show.

You may discuss why you don't want to watch it, including your stance on the creator's views if that is what makes you not want to watch it.

However, please avoid the topic of whether the discussion is a valid one or not (including the whole general 'artist vs. art' sidebar--we've done that a million times to death, and you're not going to change anybody's mind). Stay out of the 'generalised meta' of it and stick to the show and it's creator. Note that non-inclusive language is not tolerated here, as per the rules.

Thanks, folks.

I think it’s quite hard to separate the artist from their art at the best of times - what you know about them has to affect how you enjoy or interpret their art.

If we knew that GRR Martin was an abusive partner and parent, for instance, I think that would colour how we read Game of Thrones, and change whether we chose to read it. If we knew that Tolkien had been a Nazi sympathiser and had helped fund the BUF, I think we’d then have to interpret The Lord of the Rings very differently. This isn’t really any different.

(Thankfully I don’t think we know either of those things to be true, AFAIK.)
Tolkien was very much not a Nazi. When his German publisher asked him to certify that he was "Aryan" in order to be able to publish the Hobbit in German, he basically told them to bleep off, but in slightly more polite terms.

Thank you for your letter. I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend by arisch. I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people. My great-great-grandfather came to England in the eighteenth century from Germany: the main part of my descent is therefore purely English, and I am an English subject—which should be sufficient. I have been accustomed, nonetheless, to regard my German name with pride, and continued to do so throughout the period of the late regrettable war, in which I served in the English army. I cannot, however, forbear to comment that if impertinent and irrelevant inquiries of this sort are to become the rule in matters of literature, then the time is not far distant when a German name will no longer be a source of pride.

Your enquiry is doubtless made in order to comply with the laws of your own country, but that this should be held to apply to the subjects of another state would be improper, even if it had (as it has not) any bearing whatsoever on the merits of my work or its sustainability for publication, of which you appear to have satisfied yourselves without reference to my Abstammung.

I normally don't call this out, but did you note how quick people were to jump on a PoC (perhaps one of the few on this site) and try to label me?

Does that seem odd?

I normally ignore it and give people a pass on it.

However, let's get brutally honest here about the complaints people are making. This is not about the author, this is about this show.

In regards to the show, I don't know if I will watch it or not. I don't know if I watch it if I will like it or not. I have read though that HBO have specifically stated that they are not going to allow the author's political views to influence the show and that they have tried to be more inclusive in the show itself.

The big thing about the show is that I am a PoC and this show has one more major PoC in it's cast than the films did (which basically, were lily white with a token PoC occasionally tossed in). I don't know how I feel about him being cast as Snape. I don't know if it is a good or bad thing overall, but I do know at least there's representation.

I have a wait and see attitude on this, but I know a bunch of white folk who think they are defending people like me and making a fuss about it. I can understand some of it (especially if they portray him in a bad light, but I have read that the HBO execs have this show particularly under high scrutiny due to the author's polarizing statements and other aspects of how the books were portrayed in the past, so I am hopeful), but some of there complaints also sound an awfully lot like a bunch of angry racists who wish the entire cast were lily white like the movies as well.

When people are complaining about the film, this casting comes up an awfully lot, and people use this excuse more than even the author to say why the show is flawed.

I'll be honest, I don't know. As expressed in my opening post, I have doubts, but I also have hopes. I don't see the books themselves as absolute terrible things (and perhaps, that's because I haven't actually read the books), but I know a PoC was cast in a major role, and that in and of itself has me somewhat interested.

At least they got the name right this time.
yeah i saw an article on the yahoo homepage about that and it made me chuckle

The kid playing Harry Potter has to be one of the most Harry Potter looking kids I've ever seen.
The casting looks good, I don't like the fact that the actor who's signed on to play Snape has been sent death threats.

So, annual releases won't be a thing, I understand why but hopefully it won't like ST with years and years between seasons

I've made my points, and I appreciate all y'all who don't want to listen to me. And Morrus allowing those posts to stand. If you do watch it, I hope you enjoy it. I will never watch HBO again. Which is a bummer, but there is plenty of entertainment otherwise out there. So I'm likely out of this thread. Standing with the status quo is political. Being silent is political. That's it, last thought. Have fun.
