Only problem is, I made my own battle mat out of a sheet of transparent plastic. Do you have any idea how hard it is to draw anything other than squares on a homemade version?

Nope, no idea. I'm lazy and like to buy things.

Can you use a laserprinter to do the hex-grid stuff? Or is it a really big battlemat?

It's 1/4" inch thick rigid transparent plastic, about 2.5'x3.5'. My company's graphics art department could print whatever the hell I wanted on it, but I don't like bothering them with D&D stuff. Too often.
