D&D 5E EB's One Shot - Irongrad (IC)

[sblock=OOC]
Just me catching up...

Ssz'irac manages to get two items without being caught.

The case is unlocked and holds two steel vials stopped with wax. But has room for four such vials.

Bilkar feels that the old sage would be powerful, if not for the curse. He needs the spell as he is becoming to weak to research and create the effect himself.[/sblock]

Tracking a teleporting mage is difficult to say the least." the magistrate says when it seems Ghilarite is to overcome to continue. "It is a statue to some long ago hero, about ten miles northeast of town. Out of my jurisdiction, so I cannot use the city watch or I would have taken a company there myself. Instead we need your help."

The old sage nods at this as he and the magistrate await a decision from the group.

“Calm yourself, gnome,” Zuleyka told Bilkar as he scrambled, hissing, out of the chest. She pulled out the two vials from the case. They were sealed with wax. “Can anyone tell what these are?” she asked the others.

“We’ll help, if only because it helps ourselves,” Zuleyka said, putting the vials back and the case and clicking it closed before slipping it into her pack. “We should be able to make it there just as the infernal sun is going down.”

OOC: Moving things along...

After getting as much information from Ghilarite as they could (like info about the two stoppered vials - potions of healing 2d4+2, after effect faerie fire), the magistrate leads the group out of town. HE answers their questions as best he can and then gives them directions to Irongrad.

Everyone is lost to their own thoughts along the long road into the green foothills of eastern Cormyr. Grey clouds soon move into the area from the northwest and adds a pale gloom to the world (but allowing the drow a moments reprieve from the sun). The hill country you travel is open with no buildings or people with only the road to break up the green and yellow of the tall grass that coats the folding land. A herd of wild horses can be seen running hard almost half a mile away and suddenly a high pitched whiny or neigh can be heard.

Suddenly a small horse crashes through the brush off to your right, followed by a giant bird with a huge axe shaped beak. The horse turns away from the group and the bird misses chopping the poor creature in half. It stops and allows the horse to run off. It stands staring at the group for a moment it's head tilted and huge eyes blinking once.

Then it raises its head high and gives a strange hawk like shriek, "AWWLKKK!!" Following the call more huge beaked heads pop up out of the long grass. First one, then two more, followed by a fourth. They all look about and upon seeing the party they give out a cry and advance forward hungrily.

Zuleyka sighed with relief as the grey clouds covered the hated sun. She was a bit startled as a horse darted out of the tall grass, pursued by a large bipedal creature. “What strange creatures are on the surface,” she muttered.

And then there were several of the things, and they didn’t look friendly!

“Look alive!” she yelled in warning to the others. She backed off the road away from the creatures as she drew her sword. She spoke a word and threw her hand out, sending a bolt of flame at the nearest creature.

Bilkar Gnome Druid

"Osta! No not Osta. Stupid hungry birds. Shooo. Awkawkkaww" (beast speech for "We found food!") At the end of the statement as a strange avian sound emits from the small Gnome Bilkar does what can only be described as ruffling his body and puffs up.

It is unclear if it is meant to add credit to his threat, or to simply not be out done by the Drow, but Bilkar produces a ball of fire in his palm and hurls it at the same bird Zuleyka hit. The ball of fire exploding as it hits the birds head so hard that it nearly knocks it off it's feet.

OOC:
Attack Round 1: 1D20+4 = [19]+4 = 23

Damage Round 1: 1D8 = [8] = 8

I have no idea if I can actually use my racial beast speech to talk to these things or not.

Ssz'irac hesitated. He may have more experience with the various creatures of the surface than Zuleyka, but the drow does not recognize this particular bird. What years of drow backstabbing culture have taught him, however, is to recognize hostility, and these creatures are definitely looking for trouble.

His first impulse is to take a step towards the axe beak, but that would mean exposing his back to a drow female he does not completely trust yet, with a ready rapier. Instead, Ssz'irac takes his pack off his shoulder and produces a sack of marbles, which he then rolls out on the ground between him and the giant birds.

Only then does he draw his own rapier, ready to defend himself from any bird who crosses the tricky patch of ground with slippery ball bearings.

OOC: Roll out ball bearings on squares J10, K10, J11, K11. Creatures moving across the covered area must succeed on a DC10 Dex saving throw or fall prone; no effect if moving at half speed.
