D&D (2024) Chance for a warlord?

Ok, as you probaly know, I am not the biggest warlord fan, but hear me out.

If the psion gets through playtest, I see a real chance to get a full warlord for 5e.

Why? Psion is a full caster, that builds upon the psionic dice mechanic that the psi warrior already uses.

The warlord could expand superiority dice to be their main feature. And since we are missing a real support character that is strong when getting some short rests, that type of warlord might fill that niche pretty well.

I'd at least would like to see a UA of that.

Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s real demand for a warlord like there was for artificer or psion. I mean, I’d be thrilled, but I don’t think it’s even on WotC’s radar.

I think the biggest obstacle to this is less the superiority dice design and more the fundamental friction with non-magical healing.

If you add magic to a warlord, you get a bard. If you keep it non-magical, healing wounds is going to be a problem.

We'll hit another "Hit Points are purely narrative contrivance!" vs. "Hit Points are diegetic!" debate in about a page or two, I'd wager.

Which doesn't mean that WotC could never do a warlord, just that it would be difficult to do one with the non-magical healing that I'd wager many believe is core to a warlord's schtick.

I'd be fine with a mosrly THP warlord.
With a side of Healers feat.

I specifically said suporter, not healer. Although thwre already is nonmagical healing.

I can see a bard that is nonmagical too. But when alll wounds disappear over night, we already have nonmagical healing anyway.

See above.

I liked the purple dragon knight of SCAG. It was too weak. But it already was able to heal a bit here and there.

I don't feel as many people will object non magical healing as 10 years ago.
2024 is closer to 4e than 2014 d&d. So we will see.

I can see a Warlord as a subclass of Fighter, sure...start with the Battle Master as a framework, and create a list of new 'battle cries' or whatever to go along with it. As others have mentioned, nonmagical healing is going to be a stretch but hey, it's always been a stretch. (blah blah eight hours are all you need yadda yadda...)

But with thirteen -- soon to be fourteen -- different character classes on the roster, I'm not sure there are enough gaps to need a full class, though. But if they can find enough room for it in the design space, I'd like to see it.
