20 Level War Priest

Devious Kobald

First Post
Hi this is my first post on these boards Id like your opinion on a combat heavy cleric varient ive made for my up comeing campaign.
HD d10
Class skills as cleric -diplomacy +intimidate
Skill points 2+int
Proficiencies simple weapons, any armour + shields (not tower)
Spells. Same as cleric but minus 1 per day, that means none at first level exept if you have high wis, but u still get your 1 domain.
Domains 1 of choice + either war or metal
Saves good Fort, bad ref and will
Base attack bounus Good as fighter
Feats. War priest get a fighter bonus feat at levels 1,5,10,15,20

As you may have noticed this is not a 20 level version of the PrC its just an oppropiate name. i hope this is the right place to post this.
thanks

House rules is really the right place for it...

As for the variant itself, sounds pretty overpowered to me... really the cleric already is a warrior priest. Trading one domain, will saves, turn undead and one spell per level for the extra BAB and feats alone is almost a no-brainer. Look at how a paladin compares to this guy at level 20 for a second...

If I may suggest a replacement, how about this:

HD: D10
Proficiencies: All simple and martial weapons, all shields (including tower shields), all armor types.

Saves: Fort: Good, Ref: Poor, Will: Good
nonstandard BAB progression
1 +0 Bonus Feat, no caster progression
2 +1
3 +2
4 +3
5 +4
6 +4 Bonus Feat, no caster progression
7 +5
8 +6
9 +7
10 +8
11 +8 Bonus Feat, no caster progression
12 +9
13 +10
14 +11
15 +12
16 +12 Bonus Feat, no caster progression
17 +13
18 +14
19 +15
20 +16

The character gets one domain--something like War, Destruction, Strength, Metal, etc.

He has the option to get weapon specialization with the deity's favored weapon as one of his bonus feats as long as he has six levels of war-cleric.

Clever players may notice a certain similarlity between this class and Fighter 4/Cleric 16, but there are enough differences to throw at least some of them off-track.

I guess it is a bit over powered, but if anything id say yours was under powered though its a good start. The thing is a normal cleric just does the persistant spell thing giving up turn attemps to give him divine power all day which is better than my class. Lets compare my class with the cleric.

War Priest loses 2 skill point per level,-1spell perday of each level, bad will save, choice of domain, no turn undead, no spontanious healing
Gains good attack bonus and 5 fighter bonus feats average an extra hit point a level

I dont think its a bad trade fighter bonus feat are reasonably limited if i had to remove something more id probably remove the FBF at 5th and 15th, or keep d8 as hit dice. Please dont say its loads better than a fighter coz everthing is after level2
O and just so you know ill be using the prestige paladin.

Thank for the replies

Did you wan't to hear peoples opinions or just a confirmation from the community that your class was great ?

I too find your variant overpowered and agree with Elder-Basilisks changes. No class should have full BAB and full spellcasting (9th level spells).

You do not loose skillpoints, clerics get 2 skillpoints per levels too. Turn undead is a very situational benefit that basically just spares you the time it would take to kill lesser undead that are no threat anyway (at least at higher levels). I would expect a warpriest to most often have War domain anyway so nothing lost there.

All in all it seems you want a fighter who also cast spells as a cleric. Your class looks more like a Gestalt combination than anything else.

Compare to the prestige paladin who will at best cast spells as a 13 level cleric and have +19 BAB (assuming he went into the class as a 6th level cleric).

I guess I'll point out that the WOTC book "Defenders of the Faith" has a prestige class also called the "War Priest" (which is what I thought this thread was about). I suppose someone with that book could jot down the basics here.

Sounds like you want a cleric with more martial skills. I'd suggest multiclassing Fighter/Cleric.

And when creating a totally new character class, it is better to err on the side of weaker than overpowering. You can always add things later, but it gets more difficult to tkae things away.
