D&D (2024) 2024 Spell Changes

Wait, so if you cast Thaumaturgy on yourself for the booming voice effect, you can't cast spells with a verbal component for a minute?
Good point! Depends if it's like speaking into a microphone, or actually having a booming voice? 'your voice booms up to three times as loud as normal' - awh, you can just choose not to boom.

I'm not sure this clarifies underwater casting.
'the words aren't the source of power, but the particular combination of sounds, with specific pitch and resonance, sets the threads of magic in motion'

I'd say that rules out underwater casting. UNLESS... you shout normally and calmly speak the words into an empty vessel with air inside it?

If you have a way to breath underwater you used to be able to talk normally underwater.

Little bit of craziness...

Sorcerer 10 + Wizard 9 + Warlock 1

9th level Conjure Minor Elementals lasting 20 minutes (Extended)

258 casual damage if you only need cantrip-level attacks.

300-550 damage using upcast Scorching Ray (between 4th and 8th level slot) if you need dragon-killing damage. Quicken that cast and you can cap it off with another Eldritch Blast, for between 550 and 800 total damage on a single turn.

Or just single-class an Evoker Wizard.

Casual cantrip damage from Fire Bolt is 81, and 40 damage even if you miss.

And Scorching Ray still gives you 300-550 damage when upcast to a 4th-8th level slot (though not as reliably without advantage on the attacks from Innate Sorcery). Or if you Overchannel a 5th level slot, 618 damage.

You can do more total damage with Meteor Swarm, given enough targets, but Meteor Swarm is only 140 damage on a single target. You can almost double that with Eldritch Blast, or do four to five times that on a single target in one turn using one of the above setups.

Is there anything I'm missing that prevents this?

Without going thru the math specifically, you probably aren't missing anything. Even if what you wrote is wrong somewhere, there's probably another way to do even more damage with Conjure Minor Elementals - the scaling is super busted and WotC was asleep at the wheel when they let it thru.

Feeblemind is still available via the 2014 PHB since there is no 2024 spell with that name, correct?

Re: Spirit Guardians - I've never considered the spell to be an issue with encounter building and love the idea of the cleric holding a Dash to move around on another turn and hit enemies with it again, or a 10th Level Monk Step of the Winding the cleric around the battlefield to create havok (or one of the Fey subclasses teleporting them around, etc). For the players, it's teamwork and/or awesomeness. For me as the DM, anything that paints an even bigger target on the Cleric to give the enemies a reason to focus fire on them the better :)
