These stories always depress the hell out of me. Why do they always go and kill the lion several hours after the fact? That's just pointlessly vengeful, particularly since they have no way of knowing if it was the same one. In this case, they killed two, which means that at least one poor mountain lion was shot just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. :(

I know, it's fine for the prey-item to fight back nothing wrong with that. But really, there are about 7 billion people in the world and maybe ten or twenty thousand wild cougars. So I figure until the cat's body count hits at least 300,000 it's a favorable rate of exchange.

Hopefully DNA testing will be able to make sure no cougars are wrongly executed.

(Snarkiness aside, I agree. It's kind of sad. The rationale, of course, is that once they've learned to kill, the animals will do it again, but it still seems like they could do a better job of making sure that they have the right one.)

As long as one of those is Kim Bauer, I really don't care how many other people it's killed, it should be worshipped.

It's definitely an unfortunate round of events, for everyone involved, including the cats. But they have to do something, because once a cat has attacked or killed once, it's more likely to do it in the future, as it learns that humans are easy prey. That's the danger with man-eaters.

Admittedly, humans have killed *far* more cougars than cougars have people. But it's really hard to say that to someone who's just had a family member mauled. I'm sure if it was someone you knew, like a child, sibling, or parent, you'd end up wanting the same thing.

I say that despite the fact that I think they're beautiful animals, whose propensity to attack is being increased by the fact that humans are eliminating all the wild spaces they need in which to hunt.

If they got close enough to shoot it, and aren't sure they have the right cat, I would think it would make sense to tranquilize them, test the bite marks or DNA or whatever, and then if they have the wrong animal, let them go.
