4 pit fiends too much?

Actually, this could be fun.

*looks up Pitfiend in the SRD; first thought: +12 Init? WTF?*

Wow. The pitfiends grew up.

4 3.5E Pitfiends should outclass a L15 party so badly that they can take the party prisoner. This should horrify the players, without engaging in the trouble that could be caused by just butchering them all.

Okay, they get Power Word Stun at will. The PCs should definitely be taken prisoner, and then you can run a neat jailbreak-from-Hell adventure.

i was just wondering if putting a level 15 party up against 4 pit fiends would be too much..any ideas? this would be using 3.5 ed.

:D :D :D

LOL. Hilarious.

I prefer the 3.0 pit fiend; the 3.5 version of it & the Balor are far too powerful, more like Lords of Hell than Legionaries of Hell. I'd use the 3.5 pit fiend for the lesser Dukes of Hell and the 3.0 stats for Mephisto's & Asmodeus' pit fiend legions.

Shouldn't this thread be moved here? Or is it certain that this is a serious question? If it is, then probably Zorkion is one of the four pit fiends...

Anyway, I'd like to know: how did you set up this encounter (pit fiends warping in...)? And, most important, why?

Castle Greyhawk level 2 has 4 pit fiends... and Asmodeus... mind you, they don't fight, they just cast a bunch of produce flame's and leave... really against their nature, if you ask me, they should've power word: nuked the place.

Yes, I remember playing a paladin who had to invoke the "Lawful Good not equal to Stupid" rule during that adventure. Actually I had to several times... something about Demogorgon being on the Wandering Monsters table later on...

If you're using the Original 3e Pit Fiend, 4 of them is an EL 17 encounter and should be a decent encounter. If you're using the Revised 3.5e Pit Fiend, 4 of them is an EL 24 encounter and is way too much.

An encounter with 4 Pit Fiends and 6 Mariliths in a 3.5e game MIGHT be of interest... if they're fighting each other as well as the PC's. Then you need to concern yourself with how XP are awarded, as this encounter is clearly not as difficult as 4 Pit Fiends and 6 Mariliths. I'd suggest awarding full XP for fiends mostly (say 75% or more hp lost to player effort) killed by PC's, half XP for fiends killed by a joint effort between the PC's and the other fiends (25% to 74% hp lost to player effort), and 10% of the rest (less than 25% hp lost to player effort).

4 pitfiends! What on earth did your party do to deserve it. If played intelligently this will be a tpk unless the party escaped real fast.

A chimpanzee with a lobotomy could wipe out a 15th level party in the first round with 4 pit fiends.

In the first round.

Maybe if you used 2nd Edition Pit Fiends. ;)

DM: The Pit Fiend attacks.... crap, it doesn't have a BAB... so it misses...
PC: Dude I so attack the Pit Fiend. Does a 24 hit?
DM: AC of..... -1 what the hell? Crap, you hit. These Pit Fiends are tools.
