D&D 4E 4E FRCS Cover: NOOOOOOOOOO!

I think that the piece itself is decent, and I do not dislike Drizz't, but I do not think they are being very consistent with their direction. As we have seen, the big complaint with the Forgotten Realms is the prominence of high level NPCs. So, they sought to address this problem in the 4e conception of the setting. Yet, they play Drizz't on the cover. I am not going to say that they dropped the ball, but I think they could of done better not to be sending a mixed message.

I agree. Let's nuke the setting to assure people who hate the Realms that it will be completely different! And then put one of the Big Two on the cover. He's definitely iconic, but along with Elminster he's the character who gets the most hate from people who won't give the Realms a try because of its perceived focus on "all-powerful" NPCs. Now it seems a lot of people who liked the old Realms won't give it a try because of all the changes, while the non-fans WOTC appears to be courting might be put off by the prominent presence of the poster boy for drow silliness and annoying NPCs.

allo

not a bad picture, but my choice would've been elminster. i have no problem with drizzt, but i think elminster better represents what makes the realms special.

I just hope the change the PHB cover but I doubt they will.

We could complain until we're blue in the face, but i don't think any covers will change. Is there a precedent for covers EVER changing that WotC has unveiled?

[About the PHB vs Character Record Sheet Art]
This has been said before, and needs to be said many times more before the PHB gets printed.

I disagree whole-heartedly.

The character record sheet looks too much 1E / quasi-2E. The PHB art is appropriate IMO.

Yes, actually. My custom avvie at WotC is the dragon from the origional cover of Tome And Blood (at least it was, when I could log in over there).

In fact, I believe the origional cover for the 3.0 FRCS had the Elmunchkin himself on it, so there is a precedent for change...

I disagree with using Drizzt alone on the cover.

Since this is a role playing game, you want to encourage players to create their own unique character, and not one molded after the iconic NPCs.

He represents an exception to the general rule that drow are evil. Whatever character that is on the cover is supposed to represent the setting as a whole. I feel this will reinforce the idea that playing dual wielding good drow is what everyone does.

Additionally, he is alone on the cover, and not fighting monsters along side other adventurers.
It seems to me it would be more representative to maybe have Drizzt battling an iconic monster along side other iconic characters.

I get the impression that the FR setting practically has the sticker "Now you too can play Drizzt and all his friends in this new guide based on the Icewind Dale Trilogy!"

I like the cover. (there I said it)

And to be honest, if the content is good I don't give a flying fig about the cover.

$39.95!!! NOOOOOOO!

That's actually a neat picture of Drizzt. Though I think WotC is trying to milk that Drow Cow, it goes against what they've said about high-level NPCs taking a back seat.
