I do. I like the "+1 to a specific stat, +1 to a choice stat" thing, and I really like the tables for associated NPCs, momentous, etc.
Same here. The floating ASI in each A5e background provides a bit of customization to the background itself. Take the Soldier background, it receives a +1 STR, +1 to one other ability score of your choice. So, an A5e character with the Soldier background could have a:
- +2 STR
- +1 STR, +1 DEX
- +1 STR, +1 CON
- +1 STR, +1 INT
- +1 STR, +1 WIS
- +1 STR, +1 CHA
With regards to the +2 STR, AFAIK, there aren't any rules that say you can't choose the same ability score for your floating ASI. As a result, you could have a soldier who was trained to be a heavy hitter. The other ASIs combos would be good for soldiers who excel at being mobile and using hit-and-run tactics (+1 STR, +1 DEX), being hard to put down (+1 STR, +1 CON), using tactics or magic (+1 STR, +1 INT), being very perceptive (+1 STR, +1 WIS) or being good at commanding other soldiers (+1 STR, +1 CHA).
Each ASI combo could lead the soldier toward being a member of a certain class. The soldier with the +1 STR, +1 CHA could later become a Marshal, for instance, while the soldier with the +1 STR, +1 WIS became a STR-based Ranger. Lastly, if someone wanted to bring over a 5e Eldritch Knight or a Wizard Bladesinger, they could pick up the Soldier background and pick up the +1 STR, +1 INT combo.
