AD&D second edition: Why be hatin'?

As far as i'm concerned 2nd edition is a pale shadow to third.

Every wizard(or insert other class) was the same as every wizard(or insert other class).

Poor flexibility in multiclassing with strange penalties/limitations

Crap for skills

Poor mechanics thaco/ac/why does my monk not get a dex bonus(1sted?)

Fast and loose combat system ( I would not say this is a plus or a minus, but I prefer 3 - 3.5)

Fast and loose situational resolution. Why can't my guy do X? comes up much less in our 3.5 games.

I have a lingering fondness for 2nd - It was where I learned to run games.
I used lots of terribly unbalanced rules while wearing a blinder about how awful they were. I played Darksun, Spelljammer, and homebrewed
If you are trying to take spelljammer seriously then you are playing it wrong -
We had an all halfling crew - on a ship that looked like a swan. I remember using funny acents all the time. As well as an obligitory GSH as a henchman

I fixed darksun balance problems by gleefully killing off the more terrible PC's
19 str thri kreen Druid, Im not sure he ever used spells, just massacred stuff with his claws. 1 death per 2-3 sessions was normal.

The skills were just terrible - useless and nearly impossible to fail
you could never improve as a second slot devoted to a skill gave you +5%
to your base of 70% or better

So THAT'S where Minsc (Baldur's Gate I & II) got Boo!
Exactly. The GSH entry in the Spelljammer monster book came with a long list of variant Giant Space Hamsters. Some just had cosmetic changes, some were big rule variations (lernean fire-breathing doppleganger giant space hamster...), and one were the miniature giant space hamster, conveniently about the size of a regular hamster.

Something you learn when associating with any sort of fandom: Fans define themselves at least as much by what they hate as by what they love.

Hence all that idiotic Star Trek vs. Star Wars vs. Babylon 5 stuff.

Just enjoy the damned stuff you like already.

I don't hate 2nd Edition. I have fond memories of my first DMing experience and loved the game. When Alternity came out I was in love again. Third Edition and the D20 system has its base in Alternity. It is wonderful simple mechanic and admittedly I like it better than 2nd Edition, but not to the point where I hate it.

Er...have you seen 2nd ed Spells and Powers and other Players' Option books? Sorry, 1e was a paragon of balance compared to what 2e ended up as.

why do you think Psion likes the newer editions so much.

Just because I prefer one edition over another doesn't mean I hate the others necessarily. As for the great settings mentioned, they're great in spite of being written for another edition, not because of that.

here here!! :) Thus spoke the Grandmaster!
