The actors were all well-cast. If I'd had to choose a single plot from New Mutants to use as a movie, I'd have chosen the Demon Bear too. The setting they chose was good. It had promise

The script and/or direction (and subsequent editing)... not up to the task.

That's fair, though I suspect the post-edit was a big part of that problem since they kept going over and over it. I still thought it was pretty watchable. Far more than I'd have thought from the advance buzz.

Note: one of the major members of the Young Avengers is Iron Lad - a young version of Kang that decides he doesn't want to grow up to be the villain. Kind of hard to introduce him without Kang...

This assumes they're using the same composition. There's no particular reason they need to be that precise.

And Kamala Khan was not part of the the Young Avengers in the comics, but it sure seems like she's going to be in the MCU. The roster isn't going to be the same.
They need to use the characters that are working, like Kamala, Kate, and Teen, and ditch the ones that aren’t. They could even add Black Panther to the lineup.

Trying to appease comics nerds is one of the reasons the MCU is loosing traction with general audiences.

So far the MCU has introduced Wiccan, Hawkeye, Kamala, Patriot, Stature (Cassie Lang), Riri Williams, America Chavez, Shuri and Tchalla Jnr and we have the teaser for Speed when he's introduced. Kate Bishop had great chemistry with Yelena Belova, so they could wrangle her in too.

Skaar has been introduced too, but that was a bit bungled so might be best ignored

Spiderman, Morgan Stark and Kid Loki fit the profile but are unlikely

Yes they have. And most of them are dull as ditchwater.

They would have better off building a movie around Louis, Katy Chen and Trevor Slattery.

Not a joke. Iron Man was successful because it was an interesting character played by a very talented actor. It so happens that the good actors have been cast in supporting roles lately, with bland leads. Who was the main character in the Aquafina movie again? The only ones of these young characters who are interesting/well acted are Kamala, Kate Bishop, Shuri and Billy (they won't use a real life religion as a superhero name. Tony Stark: "His name is Teen"). The others are boring liabilities (or too old apart from a mentor role in the case of Yelena).

Shows the difference in views; I didn't find Chavez dull, and thought Bradley's grandson had potential. I also wouldn't completely write-off Cassie, far as that goes, though she was so-so in Ant-Man 3.
