D&D 5E Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

Historically, we know almost nothing about the druids. D&D druids, as well as other fantasy games, have created a tradition based on the Victorian ideas of druids mixed in with modern ecological concerns for the wilderness. As such, elves are a great choice to embrace druidic practices.

As a side note, if we could somehow fully comprehend what the druids practiced, as modern people, we'd robably still want to stick with our made up ones. 😊
It's discussions like these that led us to, a long time ago, convert Druids over to Nature Clerics. They kept most of the Druid spell list, picked up the Cleric casting and prayer mechanics, and (usually) had to worship a deity in order to function and get their powers.

There's no shortage of nature-based deities out there, be they from actual history, fantasy writings/examples, or a combination of both.

Elves, being close to the woods, and Hobbits, being close to the land, are the races most suited to supporting Nature Clerics. Humans - well, they're flexible, they'll support anything. Gnomes and are a bit of a stretch, and Dwarves are definitely out. Part-Elves are also well-suited, while Part-Orcs not so much.

I love them in literature. Just not as PC’s in games.

Tiefling seem to be the modern Kender. They attract certain types of players that seem to like annoying everyone else. I'm just RPing I'ma part infernal if course Ina gonna steal/murder/be an edgy jackass". I don't mind so much now I just boot those players very quick.

Dragonborn are a bit meh mechanically but they seem to avoid that schitck.

Those players have always been those players, and they've always been jackasses. They didn't need a specific race to get there - they'd still be that jackass no matter what they were playing. And no, I don't tolerate that nonsense at my table either. The struggle against your darker nature can make for great role playing though, and I don't have any issue with Tieflings generally.

Yeah, in 3.5 days I would run into the rogue player who only wanted to jerk around they other players and cause issue stealing and murdering. Now they're tielflings.

How does this face apply to fantasy and elves but not sci-fi and aliens?

Sci did a different genre.
. Fantasy draws heavily on old myths and legends. Ancient Greece, Rome, Vikings etc.

Sci do is still heavily human dominated but it's kinda a new genre at least for mass market.

Fantasy is more universal across all cultures. Heavily influenced by myth, legend, religion etc.
