Ampersand Sneak Attack: Alignments

They've already said that you will be able to play a lawful evil paladin.

They said that well before they let us know that the only alignments would be Good, Evil, and Unaligned, so it's possible that Law/Chaos are not in the game. The reason we keep seeing stuff like "chaotic evil" mentioned in places is because it's been ingrained in our skulls for almost 30 years.

Has there been any mention in the preview material what will happen to alignment-based magics? There are quite a number of spells and items that are directly tied to alignment, and the ol' Detect Evil and Protection from Evil spells are fairly major sacred cows (as much as I hate these kinds of spells).

Yeah those are pretty much gone, at least for now, from what I've seen.

I should ask for reference next time, before jumping to conclusion. Thanks Mourn for bringing that up.

King & country? Halfling liberation? You still have motives, you're just not overly concerned with good and evil.

EDIT: just to clarify, I think that "Pro-Halfling liberation, Not-Concerned about Good/Evil" is very different from "Neutral". Adventures about "maintaing balance" are usually pretty borning. Who gets excited about the status quo/ I much prefer that the rules encourage PCs to be for something.

I agree 100%.

IMC I may implement a d20 Modern allegiance system if I want to provide some sort of mechanical benefit for character alignment. Or we may just get in a line and do a dance of joy that D&D has finally put alignment where it belongs: an optional character descriptor with absolutely no mechanical implications at all.

Actually not caring about good and evil was a major part of the neutral alignment. Sure, mantaining the balance was also possible to do with a neutral alignment, but that was mostly done for druids and the unaligned alignment can also encompass that.

I see only two possibilities for the unaligned alignment in 4E
A. Its neutral renamed which means we get the same alignment system like in 3E just with less in game effects
B. It will be the new chaotic neutral which player will take when they want to play evil when being evil is not allowed.
