Anyone got the Dummies book?

I'm not outraged and I did expect a little pimping but based on the reading, it's almost all about the pimping. Looks like there is still room for a primer, maybe a d20 primer that actually talks about the top ten best d20 books as opposed to series of books.

Anyone get this yet? Diaglo is the only one I know whose mentioned that he's bought multiple copies, but he hasn't really gotten into a detailed review or anything.

I know I'd give body parts for an index that throrough in current WotC books!

What body parts are we talking about here?

While I'm in pretty good health right now, you never know when you might need a liver or kidney down the road.

If the offer's right, I could go through and make an index for the products as they come out.

Just need you to filll out a little form with blanks such as:

Are you a Smoker:

Family History of (fill in blank):

Plus, the black market for organs is pretty lucrative.... :)

You don't need a Spleen to live anyway, do you?

it took nearly a month. but i finally got to give the group their copies.

maybe JoeBlank, biorph, howandwhy99, Olgar Shiverstone, or Sam who's name on ENWurld i don't know can give a review.

One of my players has it. It does give a lot of advice to help newby's get up to speed. For begineers I think it could make a real difference. Given the results of the various "age, when you started playing, date of birth" polls around here, I think something like this could be very usefull for the hobby.

(BTW the other top ten lists, like arcane spell, divine spell and monsters, are pretty good, if not too surprising)

At this point, I'm a little short on cash, so all that's left for donation are a little toe, and some fingernail clippings. :D

As for the book, I read it in-store, and found it to be interesting, but to me it was an insufficient introduction to role-playing games. It seemed to focus more on tips and tricks of actual playing (Kind of like a simplified version of the way Rules of the Game on WotC Wbe Site plays out), instead of focusing more on what role-playing is and how a session would go. But for the first-timer wanting to get into D&D, it wasn't too bad.

Solid Content for New Players

I bought the book as a gag for my room-mate (she always playfully mocks our gaming group) and got the hysterical laughter response I was hoping for. Then I glanced through the book.

The first chapter details the vocabulary of the game for new folks, and it does a decent job.

The second chapter is far more helpful. It briefly describes 4 main PC classes: The Fighter, The Rogue, The Cleric, and The Sorcerer. It also give three ready-made 1st level PCs of each class that can be dropped into a new or existing 1st level game. All the math is already done, combat is summarized, and feats and skills are explained so new players can actually jump in pretty quickly.

The next chapters deal with making a character from scratch. Again, the focus is on the 4 above classes but various class concepts (like the ranged fighter, the melee rogue, etc.) are introduced that have corresponding skill and feat trees etc.

There is not a ton of stuff for folks that have significant 3.0 or 3.5 experience. However, if you have children or siblings OR if you have new players from time to time I think this book will prove extremely helpful.

I have it and I like it. I think it's very good intro material and breaks things down rather nicely. Great for new players. I also think it does a good job of explaining some concepts that are not fleshed out enough, IMHO, in the PHB.
