The thing that gets me about these covers and the artwork of the D&D cartoon is that Venger, Warduke, Presto, Eric, Sheila, and the rest were not really this iconic cornerstone of the game for me. They were a Saturday morning cartoon that was really disconnected from anything with the game outside of some branding.
This is part of why they never have had success with iconics.

I don’t think they’ve put the effort in. They could’ve done something more with Drizzt if they put their minds to it. A Dark Elf or Icewind Dale animated series would’ve kicked ass but these feel like the obvious things that they never attempt. The most we get are novels.

I don't have nostalgia for all of this stuff.. Not in the traditional sense, anyway. Can you have nostalgia for something you didn't experience?

But regardless I really enjoy all of it. I've spent a lot of time combing through old books, old Dragon/Dungeon magazines, and old adventures. It's really neat to see where the hobby came from.
You can have nostalgia for something that you didn't experience. Anemoia is nostalgia for a time you never experienced.

I think it's cool that these old characters are being used again, I loved those colouring books of Strongheart and the others, back before I knew what DnD was, and I loved the 80s cartoon. Not that my love of them is enough to bring me to buy the books when released, but maybe when they're on sale...
