AtG Howling Crag (5e PBP) IC

OOC: @Kobold Stew If you can hit more people up, the horse could use the extra hp. He's pretty squishy.

I'm proposing stealth so we can use clairvoyance or arcane eye to scope the place out first before we make our presence known...there's fishy stuff going on.

OOC: That's a good thought, but the Colonel can give THP to 5 plus himself. So someone would need to choose to go without to boost an animal. I'm not ocnvinced of the value of horses, generally, but we can always let them go if need be. If we are breaking into the fortress, however, I expect they'll be left on the outside of the gate.

Also, so you know, the Colonel has Contact other Plane and Scrying now available if needed (though probably after an initial contact), in addition to an invisible Sprite.

OOC: I’m assuming everything that has been learned was shared with with the party, I’m also assuming that Gimlak doesn’t know this new dwarf that is working with the giant. Also, if we learned about this dwarf a few days ago, Gimlak would have used sending to ask his father and other dwarves about him if its information obtained the day of the departure, he would have kept his spells, and will cast them before a long rest

Gimlak is always ready, and gladly leaves with his companions to uncover what the giants are up to. He won’t volunteer to ride a horse, but will do so not to slow the group down

Doc had had his saddle reworked by a leatherworker in the Tor, and he sat in a manner that was strange to the other's eyes, but it worked for him - he was able to negotiate steep and rugged terrain better than the others, who were often forced to join Donnell on the ground, walking their horses. Which is not to say that Doc rode much of the trip - many trails were far too treacherous to ride at all. Donnell's horse often led the way, and here-or-there leaped over a crack, rock, or other obstacle leaving Donnell to clamber over or around it, while the horse waited on the other side, shaking its fabulous mane or stomping one foot as if telling Donnell to hurry up.

Kahru had not taken a horse - instead he took the shape of a hunting hawk - and he soared over the travellers in circles. Late in the first day, he was able to warn them of a group of approaching Kobolds, who had come out of a small series of caves to investigate. The kobolds did not attack; by the time they reached the group, the Colonel had organized them in a defensive position, and the great stallion reared and flashed his teeth, and the spark zipped over the Colonel's head. It was all more than enough for the kobolds to flee in terror. Kahru flew overhead and watched as they disappeared into their holes in the rocky outcroppings above the old dwarf road.

When they made camp for their first night, Gimlak considered Kahru's question. Obmi was a strange name for a dwarf. It sounded vaguely elvish to Gimlak's ears. There were certainly no Dwarf Lords of the Crystalmist Mountains by that name. He contacted his father, who agreed, "Nah, that is no Dwarf name. But I once tried a dwarf named Hobmark - murderous bastard killed his kin for gold. I sent him to exile."

Donnell sat by the fire, pushing coals with long stick. He'd just finished eating and now he was exhausted. Unaccustomed to navigating the rocks and climbs with the stiff breastplate he was wearing, he regretted not changing into leathers for the journey.

He looked over at the horses where Arnythyn had herded them together and was standing protectively over them. At least he's good for something, Donnell grumbled to himself.

Despite his fatigue, his mind mind was racing, trying to puzzle out everything they'd learned,

"Do we have magic to find out more about this dwarf? Or the tall woman? Or the King's madness? If not, maybe we can get more information once we're closer. It would be good to have some clue as to what's going on before we announce ourselves. Maybe give us some kind of angle to get us in peacefully."

He sighed,

"If it's all right with everyone, I'm going to take first watch. I'm not sure I can sleep right now. I saw a nice outcropping with a nice vantage on our camp that will give me a place to hide and overwatch while you sleep."

He stuck around for more conversation but eventually made his way to his post to stand guard.

OOC: Donnell attempts to stay hidden as he takes watch.

The Colonel looks at Donnell, who seems already to be feeling the weight of the responsibility that leadership brings. The lad's trying hard, the Colonel thinks, and when Donnell offers to take the first watch, the Colonel cleans up the cups around the campfire, and sets down to rest, waking to take his shift in turn. Tomorrow will be another long day of travel.

"Kahru, you've found the right way to approach, I think," he says the the human.

When the sun rose to illuminate the Crystalmist Mountains, the group broke camp. The morning was bitter cold, and though it was clear overhead, the trails were shrouded in damp mists that made for poor visibility. Today they had a decision to make: Would they press on to the Crag, arriving after dark, but arriving this day, or would they camp once more in the mountains and make their way to the Crag early on the third day? The decision would set their pace as they began, as no matter how they chose, they would want to slow for caution in their last few miles.

OOC:
Catching up!

Doc is good with either. Arriving at night might disadvantage @TaranTheWanderer (believe he is the only one without darkvision) so I will tentatively recommend morning and get there refreshed.

Also, consider this a standing command that unless I post otherwise, Doc is always standing watch. While he takes 4 hours for a long rest, he doesn't sleep during that time. So as long as he is takin' it easy, he can watch. Also also, Doc has a ritual casting of Leomund's tiny hut (hunkerin' down) if we want to use it.

The night was peaceful and it didn't take long for Donnell to settle in. It felt more like old times: on watch, camping out under the stars with a campfire, the anticipation of a mission, a group of people you trust with your life. It relaxed the young man. He'd need to talk to the Colonel to stop calling him 'Sir'. It was jarring and didn't sit well with him - at least not while they were out here. He wasn't used to a chain of command - he was used to a team. A collaboration. Besides, despite all his experience, he was by far the rookie of the group.

By the time Doc tapped him on the shoulder to take watch, Donnell was at peace. He'd even managed to fix his breastplate so it was more comfortable to wear. He sat by the fire for a while to enjoy it since there wouldn't be a fire tomorrow night - especially if there were scouts flying above them. He'd rather get there in the evening, using twilight to cover their approach, find a good hiding spot to camp and then approach in the wee hours of the morning, get a good rest and then move in before the guard changed. Maybe they could get close enough for the others to do their divinations before camping. He'd suggest it in the morning and see what the others had to say. He crawled into his bedroll next to the fire and let sleep wash over him.

In the morning, over a warm breakfast, he discussed his ideas with the group.

OOC: Kharu is human too, so I don't suspect he has darkvision - although, it'd be easy enough for him to shapechange into something that has it.

It will be useful to have Tiny Hut the next day to cover our camp. Make it rock coloured. It won't really help us hide the horses though but we can probably find a good hiding spot for them.

Obviously, I agree that we should approach in the morning but very early.

Kahru was not comfortable as the sun rose over the rugged Crytsalmist. But it was not the cold and damp that niggled at the northman, rather the nagging suspicion that things were not right in the Howling Crag.

Waythe and the Barbarian were both eager to move now, but he was still uncertain just what young Donnell and the Dwarf prince had planned? They had already had there request for a meeting with the Thane rebuffed, did they think that simply showing up at the gates would change that?
The giants were already on the war path, the presence the Roc mounted scout, hill and frost giants was sign of that. Would not showing up at the Howling Crag be seen as an act of provocation - a declaration of war?
Waythe liked the option, maybe it was time to provoke the giants again.

"Perhaps we split into two approaches" Kahru suggested when the squad again gathered "some approach the gate in the morning seeking parlay with the Thane or his emissary, follow the path of the diplomat.

I wish to go undercover of night, discover another entrance, and find out what else is going on inside before meeting the Thane - we are warned of madness, betrayal and even murder, I urge us to caution and a hunters stealth.

What say you?"
