AtG Howling Crag (5e PBP) IC

After that near encounter, the Colonel is concerned. "We know they are using the skies to patrol. I think the crag in the south-west offers us the best protection. It may not be a secret that we are approaching, but it probably wasn't anyways, and we've decided to try a direct approach in any case. Arriving tomorrow just after noon will not change our initial approach, I shouldn't think."

"I agree. If we're trying to hide, I'd rather be further away from the road and have to travel further to approach than to be closer but risk being seen. The gorge shouldn't be an obstacle for Kharu.

I'm also thinking we might need to leave the horses there before we approach. Depending on what we glean about the Crag."

He looked over at Arnythyn who, it seemed to Donnell, was listening in to the conversation. He knew the horse was smarter than an average horse - and definitely more stubborn - but now he began to suspect that the animal might actually understand what was happening. He rarely had prompt it to go where it was needed. It stomped its hooves, annoyed.

They arrived at the chosen campsite well after dark. Kahru had scouted the rocky overhang multiple times to make sure that it was safe and clear of occupants. Though it was still a mile away across the gorge and surrounded in nightly mists, the Howling Crag could be seen in the distance as looming dark peaks, with the soft glow of torches at their base.

It had been a long day. Though Kahru had avoided the grueling hike, he'd flown back and forth between the group and their destination several times, through biting beating wind-currents. The rocky overhang was not the most comfortable of camp-spots, but it was very welcome by the time they reached it. A hard flat place to place down a bedroll was a relief in spite of everything.

OOC: I'm going to be "mean" and say that I'd like a dc12 CON Save from everyone, or you will wake with a level of exhaustion. I'd like us to keep adventuring even if you have one, and you'll have to try to remember to take the -1 to all "d20 tests" that it gives. Feel free to hit me up with excuses for why you might have proficiency or advantage of the check (if you don't otherwise have it). I might agree!

The mountain winds had blown cold beneath his wings and Kahru was grateful for the downy layer that insulated his hawk form from the mountains icy bite. When finally, he had come to ground , joining the others beneath the Rocky overhung, he was reluctant to lose his feathers, and pulled his cloak tight around him as he adjusted to human form.
As the camp was set he looked across to the Howling Crag before darkness set in. He also extended his vision beyond his personal limits, his mind linking with that of the spirit-bonded hawk Vadász, seeing through the familiar eyes as it took another sweep over the trail, before descending down the mountain to some other distant perch.

The journey that day was much better for Donnell. He seemed in high spirits and, often, ran ahead to scout - despite the fact that Kharu had that aspect more than covered - he seemed to do it more out of the need to expend the kind of energy only young people have.

At breaks, he told lighthearted stories of his friends and their shenanigans or wax poetic about a certain girl in Timulton. At midday, he even tried to mount Arnythyn but the Stallion would not have it and it threw the teenager to the stony ground where he laid there winded for a moment. He gave the horse a pained expression that had nothing to do with hitting the ground. It was short-lived as he pulled himself off the ground, shrugged to the others, finally admitting what everyone had already guessed, "One day. I guess not today." and he jogged off to scout their trail ahead.

By the time they camped, he was exhausted but pulled out the magical light that The Colonel had made for him and prepared food for everyone while they prepared to settle in and do their divinations. It was cold rations tonight as they didn't want to risk smoke alerting anyone.
