[B.A.D.D.] Dragon Spell List Feedback

Well, if you want to stick with Core Rules spells, then let me suggest the following:

Swap out Protection from Spells and replace with Clone.

When Wyrm dies, Clone awakens...

Remove antimagic field.

Fighting in an Antimagic area rules, if you're a dragon. However, the area produced by the spell is too small to protect the dragon. It would essentially negate his own magic but leave enough stuff for people to blast outside the field.

Gfunk - that sounds good. I'm not much of a pro-spell[i/] fan, anyway.

Interesting... are there any other opinions on this?

For clerical spells, hasn't anybody mentioned Miracle, yet ?

Enables you to cast most any lower level spell without XP cost.

Also, I'd put cure light wounds at 1st level for those dragons. It would clearly be one of the first 1st-level spells a young dragon would take, if it could.

Other nice (but not necessarily 'best spell' potential) clerical spells would be Righteous Might, Restoration (even dragons can encounter wraiths), Freedom of Movement and the various Planar Ally spells for when you need a friend.

Standard list:
0. Detect magic, resistance, detect poison, read magic, dancing lights, ghost sound, mage hand, open/close, mending
1. Endure elements, mage armor, shield, true strike, charm person
2. Bull's strength, cat's grace, blur, endurance, fog cloud
3. Haste, dispel magic, protection from elements, slow
4. Dimension door, improved invisibility, detect scrying, confusion
5. Cloudkill, dominate person, summon monster V, teleport
6. Greater dispelling, anti-magic field, programmed image
7. Spell turning, greater scrying, forcecage
8. Mass charm, maze, protection from spells
9. Mordenkainen's disjunction, time stop, dominate monster

9. As someone said, I'd remove Mord's disjunction because a dragon would hope to get it's victims' magical items. I'd put Foresight in it's place : That dragon would have a good reason not to be surprised by adventurers, etc. An excellent spell.

8. Protection from spells ? At 500 gp a casting ? With a dragon's already extremely good saves ?

I'd put in Mind Blank instead for that 24 hours a day protection against all divination magic (including those pesky adventurers scrying for your lair and teleporting right in, bypassing your fiendishly clever set of traps and minions).

Or possibly Trap the Soul (just for the imagery of a dragon holding a big gem containing his enemy's soul between his talons :D).

Clone is also very good for recurring villains, and Horrid Wilting is of course the ultimate damage-dealing spell (especially useful if you have minions since it's an area-effect spell that only affect those you want it to).

Ooh, and Demand is always spooky for players if properly reoleplayed by the DM. :)

7. Very good choices. I'd add Simulacrum (why risk yourself ?), but I really wouldn't know what to remove.

6. Antimagic field, as somebody else said isn't very useful for a huge dragon. And I fail to see what is so 'must have' about Programmed Image (although it is an ok spell). Mislead, though, would be good to have a party waste some ressources. And Mass Suggestion is (nearly) always a good choice.

5. Nothing to say here.

4. To get more milleage from blindsight and superior mobility, Solid Fog would be a good choice. Maybe instead of Confusion ?

And, for the necromancer dragon, Enervation. No save and cumulative effects. Very good for repeated hit-and-runs.

3. Very good choices.

2. Ok. I've found you can't go wrong with web. But I see how it's not really necessary.

1. Identify ? Maybe a dragon would get curious about all those magical items ? :)

Hmm... miracle is a must-have. i'm not sure about the rest, though...

Well, I'm not necessarily talking about your list. This could inspire people creating a more personalized dragon, too. :)

(And I'll stick to cure light wounds, if only because not all dragons will have 6th level spells.)

What about Limited Wish (level 7), Disintegrate (level 6), Hold Monster (level 5) and Charm Monster (level 4)?

For non-core spells, what about Simbul's Spell Sequencer (level 7) or Simbul's Spell Trigger (level 9)?

Seems like the Dragon need a couple of Extra Spell Feats...

[Edit: Added more spells]

This is a spell list I've previously cooked up for my 20th monk great gold wyrm (with defense theme to it):

0-arcane mark, daze, detect poison, detect magic, light, mage hand, open/close, prestidigitation, read magic; 1st-change self, cure light wounds, magic missile, shield, true strike; 2nd-detect thoughts, hold person, mirror image, see invisibility, shatter; 3rd-dispel magic, haste, protection from elements, slow; 4th-cure critical wounds, dimensional anchor, dimension door, improved invisibility; 5th-break enchantment, cone of cold, true seeing, wall of force; 6th-antimagic field, harm, heal; 7th-greater restoration, limited wish, spell turning; 8th-discern location, iron body, polymorph any object; 9th-gate, imprisonment, wish.

Comments?

Oh, and I've modified the antimagic field spell to be affective up to 10 feet from the caster (not as a radius affect) for my campaign. ;)

Tenser's Transformation?

Would Tenser's Transformation work for a dragon? Once the preparation spells are cast and it's time for physical combat, how about TT? The dragon can still use breath weapon and inate abilities, right?

From the SRD: "The character can’t cast spells, even from magic items. The character gain 1d6 temporary hit points per caster level, a +4 natural armor bonus to AC, a +2d4 Strength enhancement bonus, a +2d4 Dexterity enhancement bonus, a +1 base attack bonus per two caster levels (which may give the character an extra attack), a +5 competence bonus on Fortitude saves..." Of course such an old dragon already has lots of HPs, good AC, high Str and high BAB, but more may be better?
