they have decided no such thing. They have decided to provide you some options in the PHB and for the custom logic to presumably be in the DMG, because what (additional) backgrounds there are is / can be setting specific

And until DMG, all we'll have is the restrictive ruling. Which they deliberately chose over the 2014 wording.

There's no extrapolation necessary. There's no implication. The text is explicitly states exactly what backgrounds are and the components contained therein. It gives you the recipe. You're complaining it doesn't cook the meal for you.

The 2014 PHB already cooks my meal for me, so I guess I'm good. No need for the new rules.

So for two whole months you'll have to struggle by with the existing backgrounds or working out some custom ones for yourself. Boo hoo.

Speaking of which, many of the new features don't work on Beyond. Actually, a lot of stuff doesn't work on Beyond... Is that also just a boohoo come back in another year situation, or is some critique of WotC possible?

No patch. The 3 core book are planned together. So while it is quite annoying that they went with such resteictiveness, when a bit more options could have easily beend added.

sure, I just am not buying the 'woe is me, how can we possibly have other backgrounds until then' shtick

They've decided to move a lot of optional rules to the DMG, apparently they consider custom backgrounds to be optional. The DMG is meant to hand-in-hand with the PHB.

Personally I think they should have just gotten rid of backgrounds. The idea of extra customization outside of class and species is a good one, we just don't need the background chassis. Especially because there's no "soft" benefit of a background like there was in the 2014 version.
