D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 will now be releasing August 3rd on PC and September 6th on PS5, increased level cap, race & class details and more

The new revisions to the bios also considerably soften Astarion, although interestingly they do the opposite for Gale and Wyll (well, unless Gale has just been lying about some stuff).
This makes Gale work better though. My problem with his dialogue is he came across as a smarmy know-all. But this was based on the assumption that we were expected to take what he says at face value. As a manipulative liar, he makes a lot more sense.

Again, I am reminded of Babylon 5. Early on G'Kar lays it out: "No one here is exactly what he appears". So Gale, the least evil-appearing companion, may be a thorough villain, whilst the apparently villainous vampire is actually a victim.

I don't think the characters have been changed significantly. Asterion's abusive relationship was always in his dialogues if you pressed him. It's just a change in what Larian is choosing to reveal about them.

Gale = Edwin, if Edwin was actually as clever as he thought he was.

I always felt like Gale is a pretty intentional riff on Doctor Strange, with just enough serial numbers filed off that it doesn't infringe, and a tablespoon of Karsus for some D&D cred.

I very much doubt Strange is what they're riffing off of. The lead writers are all British (AFAICT - no longer Belgian!), and Strange wasn't a major character here at all until the MCU, and hasn't left much of a cultural impression.

Rather Strange seems like the latest iteration of a many-decades long series of know-it-all wizards/professors of various kinds. Doctor Who, for example, is much more likely to be a primary reference (or various other Whovian characters) given the actual writers.

Karsus, on the other hand, is likely to be in the mix because they will have had to have read up on Netherese lore and and so on in making the character, and he's going to have come up a lot.

Agree completely. People are acting shocked, but it's like, neither of those is shocking. I already felt pretty bad for Astarion despite him being so annoying, because he explained his history briefly to me, they're just being clear about it now because they're Origin characters and this needs to all come out when you pick them (there's little worse than playing a character on "false pretenses", even if it's the plot of one major and pretty good CRPG Planescape: Torment - it's not a trick to be often repeated too often - we've already got Shadowheart (probably) and Dark Urge for people who want "false pretenses").

On a positive note, Tasha's style stats are CONFIRMED by WolfheartFPS who got to use the character creator at length.

So that massively opens up the races/class combos for Tav and mercenaries, like absolutely wildly.

LOL worst case, dude, you know what the old stats were, so use those. That's the beauty of that system.

To be precise though it's not actually Tasha's, it's the 1D&D take, where everyone gets a +2 and a +1, we haven't yet been told how/what compensates humans/half-elves (who are in) for this change.
With the Tasha's rules in, I really don't know what I should first play as...
There's the REAL problem with Tasha's, absolutely throws a grenade at whatever character we were planning if we were playing Tav!

I'm still vacillating between Karlach Origin and a Bard Tav myself (will probably try Dark Urge eventually, but not a first playthrough, esp. as I feel I may well only make it a certain distance with Dark Urge before fleeing), but now I just have absolutely no idea what race I'd pick for Bard, because it genuinely could be any.

There is some content gated behind "small", so it might be an idea to play a gnome or halfling if there are no other significant factors. Otherwise, picking up Thaumaturgy is very useful for a face character, which would mean a tiefling.

What if he is less of a spoonful and more of a bucketful though? I suspect the "Nethalise" orb is actually the Orb of Karsus, and all this stuff about it exploding if it's not fed with magic is a pure fabrication. He needs to feed it magic in order to use it to gain UNLIMITED POWAH!
