Bardic music abilities

In my PHB, bardic music is based depending on Perform ranks. Now obviously if the bard was solely single-classed that would make sense (what with the minimum Perform ranks and all).

What happens with a multi-classed BLAH + Bard (who has the necessary ranks) - can he use the special inspiration/singing abilities? Furthermore, the final bardic ability - Inspire Greatness - says that "for every 3 levels the bard attains beyond 9th, the bard can inspire greatness in one additional creature." Does that mean a 12th level bard or 12th character level?

THe ones that require certain ranks, all you need to be is a level one bard. For inspire greatness, that's bard levels above 12.

Keep in mind you only get to use the bardic music ability once per day per bard level, too. That's very important.

Which, by the way, makes the Extra Music feat (from Song & Silence) especially juicy to multi-classed bards.

Except that there are about 40+ other feats that might be better. It's tough to waste ra feat on the ability to sing more bard songs, when there are so many other better feats for the concept.

Extra Music puts the final nail in the coffin for anyone taking more than one level of Bard and trying to be effective.

Now, I'm purposely saying that to be extreme, but really - Extra Music just gives you more reason to only take one level.

Sure, if all you want is bardic music. That would be like taking a level of wizard just to get a familiar. Don't discount a Bard's spell ability, the good skill selection, the good saving throws, or bardic knowledge ability.

And access to the wizard spell list, so you could use wands.

Think there's better things you could do with that feat? There's also, for many characters, better things you could do with those levels than taking the first 1 or 2 levels of bard. For other characters, sure, single-class as a bard and knock yourself out.
