IMO it´s only important when you want to set a DC like with fascinate.

It makes a difference when you´re an expert pinao player but an average singer but you can only sing to impress your audience.

Right. From a powergaming point of view, it makes sense for a PC bard to specialise in something using voice or body, like singing or dancing, just in case all his equipment is lost.

From a purely logical point of view, it makes sense for an adventuring bard to specialise in something portable - like singing, or flute, or fiddle - rather than, say, pipe organ.

But if the foolish bard happens to have a pipe organ available, he can use his Perform (Pipe Organ) ranks to set his Fascinate DC.
