Best TV Season Finale (Possible Spoilers)

Re: Dallas?

I'm pretty sure that Dallas started the tradition of the season-ending cliffhanger with 'Who Shot JR?'. Were there any shows that did such a thing before that?

I would not know about television- but the concept of the cliffhanger has been used in cinema since the old movie serials.

It was used much earlier then that in fiction printed in newspapers.

Salutations,

DS9 had one of my favorite- the first time they meet the Jem'Hadar. They were on a camping trip on the other side of the wormhole and were captured by the Dominion.

There was a great line along the lines of "Why couldn't you have been a Klingon? I was looking forward to meeting a Klingon."

But the best part of the episode was in the end when the Federation sends a Galaxy class ship to flex its muscle. Tee hee.

Yeah, that was a great episode. DS9 really left the Next Generation's shadow and came into its own with that one.

The season 5 finale "Call to Arms" was also one of my favorites - Starfleet must abandon DS9 to the advancing Dominion forces. Good stuff.

Babylon 5 is a given.

Millenium was good but it had started to suffer from X-Files Convolution Syndrome near the end. Last episode was very powerful nonetheless.

One series finale I remember well was actually for Space Above and Beyond of all things; where a good deal of the major characters basically died in one last doomed battle. Classic stuff.

How did that end?

My love/hate for the show always kept me from paying it too much attention.
Ah, Sports Night... great show.

The last episode had the show get saved at the last minute by a smart invester with a history of good business deals. Rebecca came back to Dan and the producers got a classic shot off at ABC by having the buyer of the show say, "Anyone who can't make money off of Sports Night shouldn't be in the money making business." It would have been great to see it continue as I thought the ending was bittersweet but it was very well done and watchable many times.

I just recalled another good season ender: Season 4 of Newsradio. That was the one with the Titanic spoof. Fuuuuunny. Too bad it was the last one Phil Hartman did before he passed. The show was never the same after that altho I did like the tribute ep they did to him...

Gawd, I loved Millenium. The last season bit, but everything up until then was amazing. Anyone know when/if that will hit DVDs?

I thought of another one I liked. ER finale, season before last, when Dr. Greene lets that murderer die in the elevator. That last shot of him looking down on the guy, firing off the defibrillator charges into the air, and that evil look on his face while he did it. Still chills me, thinking about it now. Shame little was made of it the next season, although I thought it was kinda implied later when Mark's cancer returned that this was his karmic punishment.
