Bye Monte!

Ptolus. Yeah. Seems like a good high point to go out on.
[mr cook]Ptolus? Done. Now what do I follow that with? Hmmm.[/mr cook]

And his answer is to move on. He's created his magnum opus. What does he follow that with?

I'm only semi-serious. I'm sure he has lots of other ideas he could work on. But why not exit on such a high note?

I am glad I didn't buy Ptolus now, as lack of continued support from the author is usually a bad sign for the long-term viability of a line of gaming products.
Poeple were saying this sort of thing in a similar thread on RPG.net. I do't get it. How much support do you need for a product that, including the CD-ROM, has 1000 pages of material in it?

Hearing that Ptolus will be stand-alone is what finally sold me on it.

I don't get it either. Cripes - what more do you need? This is 10 products in one.

Clearly, if a product does not have less than 200 pages and require at least three pages of errata within two months, in addition to having more than five books "planned" within a year of initial release that will even make the first book more than 50% useable...

well...

then it's not an RPG product you can sink all of your money into purchase with confidence that people will still be scrambling to complete a even close to finished, polished product supporting after release.

But I'm not bitter, or anything... :) Heaven forbid someone get support for doing it correctly different than the average company.

I have the distinct feeling that everyone missed the reading between the lines. He said he getting out of writing for games - 4e probably isn't it.

I think it's spelled out clearly that the mystery project that was too good to pass up is specifically an RPG project.

"Well, at least one more game project. Earlier this year I got an offer to work on something so cool that I couldn't say no. That comes out next year."
"Other than that, though, the irons I have in the fire, so to speak, are unrelated to traditional RPGs."

Actually, regardless anything else, I doubt Monte will just disappear from the Internet anyway. He's always been extremely approachable, and quick with responses to any issue. Even if he does dissassociate himself with the RPG industry as a whole, I'd be willing to bet that he'll be there to answer any questions/problems with Ptolus for a long time after it's release.

And i say that as someone who has no intention to purchase Ptolus.

When I saw the news announcement on the front page, I had to make sure that my calendar didn't show April 1st.

Ptolus arrived this morning, and I'm thrilled. It needs no further support. It stands alone.

For Monte, and for Sue, I wish only the best. I look forward to the last too-cool-to-pass-up RPG project, and I look forward to whatever is coming next from the mind of Monte Cook.

A Paladin in Hell, DMG 3.0, RttToEE, Eldritch Might et al, Arcana Evolved, Ptolus . . . Monte and Sue renewed my love of D&D. I have derived tremendous pleasure and extensive edification from his work - from their work.

Thank you for the good times.

p.s. the upside to Malhavoc slowing to a crawl is that I'll finally be able to catch up on the products I want.

Quoted for truth...I feel like I'm losing a good friend who is moving away...

Monte hasn't stopped cooking, he's just turned the stove down for a while to let things simmer and absorb flavour. :)

I'll be keeping my eye out for threads to announce anything related to Monte Cook.

Stand Alone? Not only does it stand, it can actually hold up a table!

I think Ptolus is as standalone as you can make a product, though AU/AE & IH are probably dead. Guess I'll have to wait for Grim Tales 2: Dire Edition!
