D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Ok maybe I am remembering wrong, I though Treantmonk said he was priamrily using Greatsword for Graze, but they could use Longbows as well when they were not in melee range.
He said the numbers hold up regardless of what weapon they use, but they default to longbow. Bow hits more often but does less damage per hit. Greatsword hits less often but does more damage per hit. They average about the same. Strategy was spread out so they don't all get hit with an AOE if possible, and fire bows all at the same target until it drops.

That is probably how I would consider starting with that build... though I complain about metagaming/videogamey thinking with casters, so to be fair, spreading out so you don't all get hit by something is a little bit in line with that. Also, if you thinned out the ranks with bows.. it would probably be worthwhile to close the distance against less physically imposing characters (metagame: disadvantage on range for characters that are less versatile is pretty powerful)
