Can the First Aid Skill "Use Second Wind" be used on unconscious characters?

If you do use a power that makes them spend a healing surge to heal and they are Dying they go to 1 Hit Point if I recall right.

If I recall, I thought they went to 0 then gain hit points according to their healing surge. I have to look this up now.

In case it wasn't clear:

#1) Unconcious characters can't take actions. (Conditions, PH p. 277)

#2) Using the Heal skill to do "First Aid" to grant a 'Use Second Wind' allows the target "to use his or her second wind without the character having to spend an action." (Heal skill, PH p.185)

So: Yes, you can use a Heal check to cause an unconcious character to use their second wind.

Okay? :)

Sorry to be snarky but have you even read the PHB Skills section?

PHB p.185 - Skill HEAL - Section FIRST AID - Sub-Section USE SECOND WIND:

Make a DC 10 Heal check to allow an adjacent character to use his or her second wind (page 291) without the character having to spend an action. The character doesn’t gain the defense bonuses normally granted by second wind.

And if you had just not put in that first sentence, your post would have been a lovely one, a post that shows you are willing to help your fellow board members and improve the community. As opposed to...you know...snarky.

This is correct. A dying character without healing surges that is healed with a healing power but does not have a surge heals to 1 hit point.

The Death and Dying section in the PHB. The page or two before the rituals.

How do you heal characters who have spent their second wind using mundane means?

If they're dying, stabilise them with a DC15 Heal check first, then take a short rest. Since they're unconscious and stable, they'll rest automatically. After a short rest, outside of combat, they can spend as many healing surges as they like to restore their hit points.

If you and DracoSuave read my original post you might not be making those kinds of comments. I have read the PHB, I wanted to know others opinions on what I posted: Can you do it to unconscious characters. Yes, I know it takes no action, as I said in the original post.

Anyway, to all the other posters, I agreed that you could do it while unconcious just making sure I hadn't missed something. Thanks guys.

Uhm....

He (or she! :)) asked for you to provide some support. That doesn't seem unreasonable.

Okay.

I morally support him going to read that section.

He asked a question, I answered it, he wants rules lawyery about it. I was in a mood where I don't feel like reading the PHB for other people, so I told him where to get the answer for himself.

Ummm.....if the healing surge would take them above 1hp it will right? It automatically raises you to 1 hp even if your negative past your surge, right?
