I got in a debagte earlier with my brother over football in Canadian high school. He's convinced it doestn't exist. I'm convinced it exist and no one cares. So whats the deal with high school football in Canada? How popular is it? Is the star football player a stud like in the US?

It sure does exist. Unfortuneately my HS didn't have a team (small town...we did have lots of hockey though heh) so I'm not sure how "studly" the star QB etc. would be. From my experience though, star athletes in any sport up here are generally highly regarded (atlthough in my HS the most popular guys weren't particularily athletic...more charismatic with good drinking skills). As far as no one caring; well, the high-school football playoffs get lots of local tv sports coverage and seem to have pretty good attendance (the final game is played in the local CFL team's stadium).

But what I hear is that chicks look for guys with bow-hunting skills. :p

It absolutely exists. My city had a championship between all the high schools (divided into "midget" and "senior" grades, or something. I remember two divisions). The football players weren't automatically popular, but there was a sort of a brotherhood between them, in the sense that they were friends (most of them). Other than that, there wasn't much distinction.

We had rugby, too. There were four teams, divided by the aforementioned divisions, and divided into boys and girls (yes, we had girls that played Rugby). I think we also had a hockey team, too, but we didn't hear much from them.

It exists. It's fairly popular at the schools that offer it. I know some kids who attended schools outside their district, so they can play football for a better football team.

I went to exactly one high-school football during my time in high-school, but I still remember it somewhat fondly. It was pouring rain, and my school's team lost 3-1. With a safety and two missed field goals accounting for all the points. Ah, glory days. Anyway, there is indeed high school football in Canada, and it is a very big deal at some schools, although not nearly as much as in some parts of the states.

You're right. You're brother is... insane. ("Doesn't exist"? WTF? And all our schools are also igloos up here, too.)

You're also right that no one cares. It's an extra-curricular sport just like every other high school extra-curricular sport.

So what sports do they care about other then hockey? I've heard soccer's popular but that was on tv.

At high school level? None. University and college football is pretty popular (at least in the towns with a team at that level) and gets coverage outside of its hometown sometimes (like championship games and such). Really Canada is more 'pro' level oriented (except the CHL - that has become extremely popular of late - shame NHL has pushed it off the air around here).

I'm a little confused about your 3-1 score. Are you referring to football (soccer) or american-style football? If you refer to the latter, a safety is worth 2pts and a field goal is worth 3pts. Did you mean to list the score as 3-2? Or am I just too slow from not drinking enough caffiene?
