C'mon Sigil!

RPGs in general, and D&D in particular, are supposed to be about creativity and imagination. Sigil is one of the most creative and original ideas to come out of the game, whereas Freeport is Anycity...oh, with Pirates.

Sigil and Planescape are uniquely D&D concepts, realized and supported by the best minds to ever grace RPGs.

Freeport has...well, Pirates.

Of late I've busied myself compiling a exhaustive list of every single Sigil NPC ever mentioned in a Planescape supplement (I've recently logged my 670th such character) and I can tell you with a certain authority that there are no two such characters described in any source I've looked at thus far (In fact I haven't found mention of any beholders in Sigil at all).

Most NPCs are below 10th level, many are 0-level NPCs (in 3rd edition they'd likely have levels in NPC classes). The highest level individuals in Sigil top out at level 19 (many of which are rangers for some odd reason) with one or two level 20s. The highest level individual I can think of off the top of my head is Duke Rowan of the Fated who is a 19th level ranger / 20th level priest, and that's only because he's using the 2ed dual-classing rules.

OK, you caught me. I don't really care if they snubbed EGG or not. The decision to leave GH unsupported seemed like the same old snub, that anything created by the progenitor of the game was not worth supporting.

Nothing. I preferred Greyhawk City but looking at the numbers it was easier (and more rational) to vote for the city other than Sigil that looked closest to getting eliminated. I don't know much about Freeport but what I do know I don't particularly like. I would have voted Freeport off earlier but I wasn't aware of the contest until Round 10. I own the Greyhawk boxed set and like it; it is a vanilla setting but the Age of Worms game we played there was great. It's like Classic Coke versus Diet-Cherry-Pineapple Coke*: the latter is more exotic but most people still prefer the classic for everyday drinking.

Ah, well I can see that.

I wonder why the decision, though? Greyhawk is the default campaign setting of all the core books, but really--how often is anything specifically Greyhawkian thrown in the core books anyway? It sometimes almost seems like WotC didn't think there was a sustainable market anymore for Greyhawk but they wanted to throw a bone (and a few very early products) towards the Greyhawk fans anyway for nostalgia's sake or something. But I wonder what the real thinking was.

That's the plan. Keep watching the boards for my upcoming "Prepping Planescape III" thread in which I'll present my (hopefully) completed city map and index. As you can imagine, scouring a dozen sources for NPCs and location descriptions is time-consuming. :\

I think it was one of two reasons:
1) Down with the old and we can finally diverge the game from the AD&D EGG days.

or

2) They were already planning a new campaign setting (what ended up being Eberron) and didn't want the competition.

It's probably 2, but I'm feelin onery, so I assume 1.

You might try reading the material before making up stuff to slam it with, but for what it's worth, the highest level* character in Sigil was Lothar the Master of the Bones, a human cleric 25 of the abstract concept of Death. It was rather rare, virtually nonexistant to see class levels added to "monsters", but even with that, a lot of NPCs, even powerful ones, were comparatively low level (such as Factol Hashkar the level 0 sage) and some today would probably be redone with NPC classes.

*not including dual or multiclassed characters here, like Factol Rhys who was Fighter20/Wizard20 in 2e stats, or Duke Rowan Darkwood who was 19ranger/20cleric, etc.
