Cleric Won't Heal?

The cleric yesterday said something like.

"I'm not healing you unless you fall over".
...
Thoughts on her statement or expectations if getting healed?
Hiya!

The other Players Cleric character is not your personal magic item. ;)

Sorry for the cold hard facts, but, uh, does she get to decide who you attack? I mean, what if she picks a fight with the corrupt town watchmen who are trying to shake down some old peddler in the street? Can she expect you to jump in and start hackin'n'slashin'? What about if she's down to 20hp, and you're only down to 40hp? Is she to expect you to jump in front of that thrown boulder from the stone giant? I mean, it's your "job" isn't it? To take damage and fight?

The point is this: She gets to decide if, when, and who she heals with her god/desses magic. Clerics are NOT "heal bots" that are just there to provide healing support as their "main objective". A Cleric is a class; the Player plays them the way they want, not the way anyone expects them to. Now, admittedly, each Class does have a "forte", and the Cleric's is to protect and heal/revive, but anyone playing in a group that has a Cleric should NEVER 'expect' to get healed whenever they want, need it, or think they need it. Doing that is a sure fire way to get everyone in the group to never ever ever want to play a Cleric. You think you have it bad now? Try it when everyone refuses to make a Cleric because "everyone is always begging for this spell or that spell and it's like I'm not even playing my own character...so why bother?".

...just sayin'...

I don't mind it's her cleric. I'll generally help my team mates the exception is if they're trying to pick the fight over something stupid.

If I'm the cleric it depends on the edition and how abundant the resources are.

I'm not healing a pc who steals from me for example.

I'll healing word you to save your life, I might heal you depending on the situation.

Often I just take the healer feat if I roll slightly well.

If DM says default array that's fine but I probably won't take the healer feat.

Played celestial warlock last year. Took the healer feat, got plenty of short rests that game.

Hiay!

Ok, this makes more sense. I guess I read it as you sort of saying "Well, MY character should get healing when I want it from HER character because SHE'S the Healer". Kind of an "entitled player" sort of vibe. My bad. Sorry! :)

In this case, I'd probably just go with it. Let it play out. Roleplay. Roleplay your characters slowly developing 'fear' of being near death. I mean, seriously...anyone that comes to the point where they see the lights fading, everything getting more dim as they are passing out...with the horrible monstrosity slavering it's gaping maw over your head...well, that sort of psychological shock would be hard for anyone to handle.
..
Now just imaging you being forced to 'handle' that situation several times a day....all because the Cleric decided "Nope. You have to be almost dead and passed out before I help you...otherwise I'm wasting spells". I can imagine a rather deep resentment and, in all likelihood, MASSIVE distrust for the cleric. I mean, she is basically forcing you to put your life in her hands....and if she decides to run, gets put to sleep, gets paralyzed, gets swallowed whole by a purple worm, etc...before she can 'revive' you? That sound terrifying! Having to rely on someone with such an unbelievably cold and heartless attitude towards your life or death? Man...talk about a mind...uh...'beep'!

It's why I'm playing a Goliath Fighter. I suspected no one else would bother with healing.

Always keen for a short rest.

I agree with the cleric basically. Invest in your own healing/damage mitigation.

Once you get over 4PCs I think you need a secondary healer anyway.

I took the fighter because it's what the party needed and I've played a Paladin recently so didn't want to do it again.

Hmmm...so low-grade passive-aggressive PvP is fine (in this case expressed as the Cleric refusing to cure the Fighter) but when the Fighter puts the Cleric out as monster food the Fighter's player gets booted?

Yuck!

I'm on the Fighter's side in this one.

Cleric will heal fighter if required. Why did fighter take polearm master instead of healer feat though?

Cleric heals fighter for minimal healing fighter goes down no healing word available. Cleric just doesn't get that many spells in 5E. And they're not that good at healing except life cleric, druid beats them unless DM knows about healing spirit errata.

There's also 4 people potentially requiring healing. If no one else invested in it eg took a feat, levels in some class or played a Paladin instead of Fighter (5th person joined picked fighter)

Cleric was front liner because rogue wants to be a crap archer.

Even if she wanted to she can't heal anyway.

Also
Cure 1d8+4
Guiding bolt 4d6+rider.

I kind of look at the fighter taking a combat feat to kill better as doing his job better. I see each class as having a role and the clerics is to heal, maybe not all the time or each round, but his class needs to look out for the others. Same as the fighter is to go stand in front of the giant, or the thief to go and disarm the magical trap, or the mage to go wizard things. The game is designed that way.

I get that 5e changes this a bit and the game can be played with all fighters for example, but now things are being changed with dropping a mage to attack the PCs and a players is crying foul. I could say that it is their fault for picking the same class or modify the world to make fun. Still changing the way the game is designed.

We had a big blow up a few years ago back in 3e about this. We since the end of that edition have had a house rule that anyone can veto another players concept and things like this get discussed at character creation night (session 0).

playing in a party means agreeing to work together. I will say that if I were planing a fighter or paliden and found out our team cleric or bard wanted to just be an upfront fighter and not heal I would either veto it or choose to play something every different. The game has roles you play, and yes a cleric CAN be the front line tank, but I would hate to make a front line tank just to have another player choose to be one

Yeah she's hoping someone else would have taken some sort of healing ability.

She would heal in a pinch, healing word if available and someone's unconscious sure.

It's not an absolute what she's saying is don't throw your hit points away then expect healing.

At level 1 the 6-8 encounters go out the window. We had one although you could say 4 or 5 if you count traps and obstacles.

She doesn't like healing barbarians, anything else is fair game.
And this looks crazy annoying. “Throw away how”. Who does that, who thinks like that. We took hop damage helping the party, if we ask for healing and you have it but won’t do it you are going to be asked to leave after a while.
