tovokas's map is an excellent blend of looks and functionality: there's enough colour to make it pleasing to the eye, but it's not so fussy that it'll become indistinct if printed in greyscale or black & white.

pbartender's map would be my second choice.

I just wanted to add that I can understand Russ' dilemma here. And congratulate the artists for making it so hard to choose! I like virtually all of them. And even wearing my "As a DM I like simple clear maps for ease of play" there's so little to choose between them.

I would say that whomever actually wins, the real winner is ENWorld, showcasing the talent of its members. So congratulate yourselves, all you artists.

I worked primarily in Photoshop for this project. Like others I started with a land layer and water layer, erasing land to create landmasses and rivers. I utilized a mountain technique that was fairly new for me and is detailed at http://www.roxanne.org/~torvel/mountaintutorial. In my opinion it still needs some work but it has potential. It is also similar to a number of techniques used by others but I think I can make it my own.

Forests were pretty standard; large green area, darker green border, and then a fuzzy scatter brush to provide some mottling to the forest. I fear much of that mottling as well as the small lines in the swamps are lost in the final image. But I chalk that up to part of the learning process.

I think if I had a little more time I would have experimented further, either bringing the mountains more in line with the rest of the map or perhaps the other way around. But even with the second thoughts I am happy with the final result and I can say I am proud of my effort.

I honestly don't think it's much of a quandary at all.

Hall's map is the superior artwork by far.

Whatever the case Hall - if you are interested in a mapping gig, drop me a PM. I've got some artwork that needs doing for a computer product.

I picked tovokas but it wasn't an easy choice. HALL was very close as was alleynbard.

All I can say is congratulations to everyone. They are all much better maps than I could do, even with a good mapping program. I would be happy to see just about any of them in a gaming product that I bought.

I'd like to see a runoff of the top 3 after this one. Makes me wonder if there'd be different results if halls was up higher.

No doubt about it - Hall all the way (but that's just because he's my bestest pal....) :D

I think mine may be lacking a certain polish and style :( Oh well, it was still fun to make. I appreciate the opportunity to do it. Now I can get back to programming, lol. Good stuff! (everybody that entered!)

Tovokos yet again

While I liked the flair that HALL had in the maps produced, the HALL maps, while flashy were just too busy and distracting. I thought Tovokos produced the most appealing map. The only thing I think the cartographer could have improved on was the texturing in the surrounded sea/ocean. Aside from that it was very well done!
