Could Ep III beat Titanic?

Given the consistently good reviews of RotS, does it have a chance of knocking Titanic off of the top grossing film spot? Will enough people go see it enough times? It's hurt by being the third film in a trilogy, I know, so I kinda doubt it could pull it off. But here's hoping.

For reference, Titanic grossed just over 600 million in the US. EP IV grossed 460 million at the #2 spot, and Phantom Menace is at #5 with 431 million.

I would say yes, and I was one of the people who saw Titanic twice in the movie theater, but I also saw Phantom Menace twice in the theater so maybe something is wrong with me?

This I have midnight showing tickets for without the wife, I will drag the wife later cause I believe she SHOULD see it, and I’m sure I’ll go when I go back home on vacation, and maybe once in between it all. :)

I doubt it. A lot of people saw Titanic again and again, and I don't think RotS has that kind of draw. I'm seeing it to basically get it over with. Heh.

Anyway, here's a One star review from The Guardian.

Not a chance. For one, it doesn't have the appeal that will draw people to see it over and over and over again. Plus there are a lot of Star Wars fans like me who will maybe see it in the theater. Once.

It will do very good business, but there's no way it comes close to Titanic. I think it will have a tough time taking out Return if the King, which I believe finally did break 1 billion worldwide.

RotK did 377 million in the U.S. I bet RotS will beat that.

Ep III does not have the "girly" draw of Titanic. Women/girls are not the primary demographic for Star Wars, but there were 13 year old girls going to see Titanic over and over again. Plus, Titanic actually increased it's ticket sales from it's opening weekend, which never happens.

On the other hand, my dad, who never goes to the movies, wants to go see Ep III. I think that's what you have to do to generate exceptional grosses -- get people into the theatre who normally don't see movies. That's why Passion of the Christ is number 9 all time -- a lot of people went to see that movie that normally don't got to movies at all.

Well, I doubt it'll beat out Titanic, but its already got the record of most advanced tickets sold ever. So, there's something. :)

And I know I'll probably see it at least four times...mainly because of family members wanting to see it and none of them coordinating together. Means I only have to pay for the Midnight showing, though :D

Bingo. The girly, romance factor is what put Titanic on top.

Yeah the movie theater up the street has sold out of three midnight showings... Something that this neck of the woods doesn't normally do, and I'm not talking about the sellouts, I'm talking midnight showing in general. (First one they've done I believe)

Well, I'm hoping to top my Phantom Menace total which was 7 times. I only saw Attack of the Clones 4 times. It will be extrememly difficult with a one year old considering since he was born I've maybe seen one movie in the theatre. Damn responsibilities. :]
