D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

Are you talking about final profit or box office? Because box office wise, its at $2.213 billion.

Estimates though was it would need 2 billion to break even with the incredible budget, but even then its a good bit above 140 million (213 million based on that estimate)
Zard's latest benchmarker for success is 140 on opening weekend. So I checked opening weekends.

The goalposts will keep moving.

For those who are saying if the D&D movie doesn't make money Paramount won't want to do another one, here is Paramount/Hasbros GI Joe movies budget vs box office and remember the general rule is a movie has to earn 2.5x it budget to break even.

G.I. Joe Franchise Box Office History - The Numbers

Note how much these movies lost, with the latest Snake Eye loses being the most brutal inspite of it much smaller budget then the first two, like it didn't even make back its budget never mind 2.5 x budget.

AND THEY ARE MAKING A FOURTH GI JOE MOVIE!!! even after the mega wiff that was snake eyes.

Why? Because for IPs like D&D & GI Joe its the merch that makes the real money, not the Box Office (although that certainly doesn't hurt).

That still goes into the we'll see what happens category;).

Cameron claimed 2 billion to break even others put it at 1.5 billion.

We're witnessing an era where a billion dollar Box office movie could potentially flop.

No it's not. I just doubled the movies box office as if it did get 140 million its a hit regardless. Anyone arguing against it wouldn't really have a leg to stand on. On that number it would probably break 400+ million.

So stop putting orders into my mouth the movies not flopping and its not doing gangbusters.

It's not looking good for a 400 million total though.

The 140 number would be undisputed was the main point.

The reverse is also true calling it a flop is unwarranted either.

No, he set the number so high because a lot of work on the 3rd and 4th movies were part of the cost of making the 2nd. That meant the 2nd had to over perform to guarantee he would finish making the rest of them. Avatar is an outlier, not the norm.

I'm aware. But if Avatar 2 flopped hard 3 and 4 would have been scaled back apparently and I'm guessing an unhappy studio.

There was also Bumblebee coming after The Last Knight flopped.
With respect, Zard is giving you facts born of the consistent "science" of box office performances.

While it is possible for a movie to have a surge beyond its opening weekend....that is exceedingly rare. While its possible for a movie to have almost no dropoff for weeks on end, that is exceedingly rare.

And no where did Zard say the movie would not succeed. What they were noting was what it would take for the movie to succeed.
he’s giving one version of how a movie becomes a success vs various other ways that it actually happens as well. He’s choosing to ignore other films presented to him that also had similar starts and launched franchises off of those numbers. He’s aiming for Marvel Studios numbers, which IS an outlier. We’ve since seen they are not the norm and no one has consistently duplicated it.

You're the one inventing what u said.

I'll halve the D&D numbers to 35 million. If it came in at that I would call it a flop.

If it came in at 140 it's a hit.

Go back and read what I've been saying all along. If it was 140 or 35 we have a definitive result.

Hell I literally reference this in my OP. Stop making up crap. Also I specifically said it's purely about the box office in the OP.

Quality of movie. Irrelevant. Merchandising Irrelevant. I'm not asking if one likes the movie or if you bought a D&D lunchbox or pop corn holder.
