Damn you avatar!!

Relique du Madde

Adventurer
I decided to look watch some of my favorite scenes from the Star Wars Prequels.. and I can't help to notice how face and fake and unrealistic the CGI is, especially the ones used for the creatures, aliens, and droids.. Damn you Avatar*.

*Thankfully Avatar's writing wasn't any better.

I think the writing on Avatar was about on par with that of final two prequals, the worse of the three. But none of these movies was about the writing and it showed.

I don't know how much of the prequels' problems can be blamed on the writing, and how much on the "acting".

For Avatar, it was pretty clear to me the folks could act, they just weren't given a whole lot to work with.

I disagree. Avatar's dialogues were a lot better than those of the prequels. It wasn't anything sophisticated, but I shudder to think of the "romantic" talks between Anakin and Padmé...

:p

My wife and I discovered that, in the second and third prequels, if you simply skip past any scene in which Anakin and Padmé are alone together, you lose nothing plot-wise and the movies become much, much more watchable.

The dialogue writing certainly didn't help. I also suspect the director had a lot to do with the acting problems. Young actors usually need more direction to get the best performance. The director's role is made more difficult by having large amounts of CGI and unusual sci-fi or fantasy type settings. Lucas was never an actor's director and a 22 year directing hiatus didn't improve his skills.

After watching that 70 minute review of Phantom Menace, I pin the source of my complaints to the lack of oversight and second-guessing during the movie's production. There are just so many things wrong with the prequels from a storytelling standpoint that I have to imagine someone noticed them, but just was too afraid to say, "Hey, Mr. Lucas, this story doesn't make any sense, the mystery is too convoluted, and all of the characters are stiff and emotionless. I thought we were supposed to be making a fun movie. This doesn't seem fun."

I wasn't talking dialogue. I was talking the actual writing itself. To me stringing together and recycling a bunch of cliches and tropes doesn't equal a story worthy of praise especially when every other science fiction flick released in the last decade essentially had the same story. What's even worse is that movie experiences based solely on CG are doomed towards becoming dated when better technology comes down the pipe (which is what happened to the Star Wars Prequels).

Thankfully, I think we reached the pinnacle of CG technology (until holo-movies and the holodeck is built) so I think it will be difficult for CG to appear 'dated'. Meaning that James Cameron can now focus on actually writing an original script when he makes Avatar 2.
