Kai Lord
Hero
Holy crap, I was mildly interested in seeing another big-screen rendition of a Marvel superhero but was turned off by the news that Ben Affleck was playing the title role.
Then came the shockingly bad trailer. It looked like the worst parts of Batman Forever plus Judge Dredd, with some signature Spider-Man shots ripped off (badly) for good measure. I almost decided not to see it at all.
Then a friend saw it and said it was so laughable that we must see it together so we could make fun of all the unintentionally hilarious sequences.
So I went and...I loved it. Not The Two Towers or The Matrix, but thoroughly enjoyable. I'm okay with sappy melodrama, and the Daredevil/Elektra love story was, well, it was kind of cool. And they made sweet love down by the fire? When was the last time we saw that in a movie? Top Secret? Ha, and I thought "old school" was a new Will Farrell movie.
And call me random, but I was totally into the whole pop-song montages throughout the film, the best being the Elektra workout. Pop-song montages?? We haven't seen those since what...Iron Eagle? Better Off Dead? Classic.
I can see why a lot of people reacted negatively toward this movie. You're either there for ride, with all of its old-school throwbacks and in-jokes, or you're not.
And what the hell, I thought Ben did a pretty good job. Jennifer Garner was stunning. Jon Favreau was hilarious. The sonar effects were cool. Bullseye seethed homicidal badassness. The prizefighting dad reminded me of another old school classic, "The Champ".
The climaxes with Bullseye and Kingpin left something to be desired, but the emotional buildup was first rate. And I love movies that start out with a supposed superbadass getting his ass kicked.
I went in fully expecting to enjoy a crappy movie starring an engaging Jennifer Garner. Instead I got the latter, but against the odds, in movie that was actually quite good.
