Deities and Portfolios

Li Shenron said:
I just thought you mentioned earlier that you might have some, but you don't really need them. If there's any reason to cover something more, you can easily add it to one of the existing deities.

True, I did mention that, but I mostly intended it as the minor gods being subservient to the major ones. Now that I think about it, though, it seems a bit superfluous. And you are right that anything else that comes up can probably be pigenholed into the uberportfolios of one of the High Gods.

Still, perhaps minor gods could be useful to fill the role of racial and monster (such as dragon) deities. Hmm...

Light I'd say is right where you have it - along with wisdom. You then get the elementt of light as the revealer, bringing knowledge and wisdom to the world. You don't really have much in the way of a sun god as far as I can see - it might be worth throwing that in with the same god. Sun worship is a big thing in pretty much EVERY pantheon as it is the sun that brings life. Which turns the arguement toward sun being along with life/fertility/agriculture.

Cold is a bit harder with your 12. It could go with the darkness/deception god or with the wild/sky/wind god or even the pain/suffering god. I guess it's a matter of filling out the personality of those three a little and then deciding where the cold fits. If your darkness deception god is more of a fun trickster it wouldn't work, but as a calculating thief/assassin figure it could work very well. The wind god bringing storms from the north works, but if he also brings hurricanes from the south it might be less fitting. However you don't have a fire/heat god so do you really need a cold portfolio somewhere? Do you have a frostfell game in mind? If so then obviously a cold god would be key - but then a fire god would also be vital.

You could throw fire in with the home/community as the hearthfire side of things or with life/fertility as a fire of passion aspect.

Hmm, yes, the Sun should definitely be somewhere and I see two alternatives - either with the fertility, agriculture... god or with the sky, wind... god. And if I have the Sun, I should also have the Moon and possibly the Stars. These could also perhaps go with the sky, wind... god, or maybe with the beauty, love... god. Hmm.

As to the elements, I was thinking about either subsuming them all in the sky, wind... god or making them independent forces, but yes, they could definitely also be split up among the gods. Because Cold is not one of the 4 traditional elements, I was treating it independently, but it probably does not make much sense to do so - there is no point limiting myself to 4 elements.

Now comes the hardest part of all. I have to think of names for all these deities! :uhoh:

Ok, please tell me whether these names sound reasonable or just completely stupid. My thanks goes to the Latin Dictionary that I used for ideas.

1) Laculpria (from the Latin 'Laetitia/Fertilitas' meaning 'fertility', 'Cultio' meaning 'cultivation/agriculture' and 'Prosperitas' meaning 'prosperity') - female Goddess
2) Civis (from the Latin 'Civilis' meaning 'relating to citizen', etc.) - male God - this also means that I may call the 'Civilized Sea' in my campaign world 'Mare Civilis'
3) Abarfexia - (from Latin 'Copiosus/Abundatia' meaning 'abundance' and 'Artificium/Artifex' meaning 'Craft/Craftsman') - female Goddess
4) Amidecia (from the Latin 'Amor' meaning 'love' and 'Decor[is]' meaning 'beauty') - female Goddess
5) Metilia (from the Latin 'Meton' meaning 'blood relations' and 'Familia' meaning 'household') - female Goddess
6) Patriarmin (from the Latin 'Patrius' meaning 'country/fatherland', 'Armas' meaning 'war' and 'Administratio' meaning 'government/administration') - male God
7) Cannol (from the Latin 'Consequentia/Gravitas' meaning 'consequence' and 'Anno' meaning 'year') - male God
8) Furtima (from the Latin 'Furtim' meaning 'stealth' and 'Frustramen/Frustratio' meaning deception - female Goddess
9) Famortis (from Latin 'Fatal' meaning deadly and 'Mortis' meaning 'death') - male God
10) Perladia (from Latin 'Perpessio' meaning 'suffering/endurance' and 'Clades' meaning 'injury') - female Goddess
11) Tyrus (from the Latin 'Tyrannis' meaning 'tyranny', 'Famulatus' meaning 'slavery', 'Consternatio/Dirus' meaning 'fear' and 'Obsequium' meaning 'submission/compliance')
12) Nacelator (from Latin 'Naturalis' meaning 'nature', 'Caelum' meaning 'sky' and 'Explorator' meaning 'explorer') - male God

13) Cortavis (from Latin 'Corruptela/Tabes/Vitiositas' meaning 'corruption/wasting away/decay/viciousness') - male God

Independent forces so far:

Magic
Fire
Cold / Ice

Water, Air & Electricity/Lightning seem to be associated with the God of the Wilds, Sky Wind, Sea...

Do you think this makes at all sense?

Also, how would you deal with deciding the source of the Gods' power? I like the idea of collected souls of the deceased providing power, but am not too keen on living believers/worshippers or even souls of the deceased being the main source of a deity's power. Any other ideas?

Hmm, 'nature' is also not perfectly represented with the deities, but that too could be another independent force along with magic, fire/heat, ice/cold and perhaps also the other elements.
