Don't know how many of you are effected by this like me, I was just wanting to get a feel for it. But because VIACOM owns my local CBS and UPN stations I have lost those as well. Luckily Enterprise is a rerun this week but unfortunately for my wife Newlyweds isn't. It looks like I will be switching to DirecTV.

WHAT!

DISH Network sincerely regrets that all MTV, BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and VH1 programming is currently unavailable. Viacom owned CBS stations are also unavailable at this time.

These channels and CBS stations, owned by Viacom, have proposed excessive rate increases which we feel are unreasonable. Viacom is demanding rate increases nearly 4 times the rate of inflation for various cable channels, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in fees that would increase the cost of our services to you.

I could have sworn my UPN was gone when I left the house this morning but they are now saying that UPN is unaffected. I will have to double check when I get home.

It's actually a common tactic to do this. Usually you'll see messages on the channels (I saw some on VH1) that the provider isn't going to carry them anymore, to call and complain.

The odd thing is, it's usually the provider that's in the right. For example, a couple years back Disney had to renew their contract with Time Warner. Disney wouldn't sign unless TW took on a bunch of other Disney-owned channels, and weren't open to compromise. So TW basically said, "Screw you, you'll negotiate or we'll drop your channels".

I don't know the number of Dish Network subscribers compared to TW, but it's essentially like playing chicken - the lost channels mean people leave the provider, but on the other hand it means less people watching the channels, and thus less revenue. I'm sure they'll be added back in time, though it sucks for all of you with Dish Network, no doubt.

And the irony of it is, two Disney channels charge nearly ten times the service cost of all viacom channels together :x. And it appears that Cox is quite likly to end up dropping Disney channels because of it (Similiar manner to the TW issue in the past) instead of deal with having to soak a 40% price increase (or justify another price hike to customers).
