I read the headline and thought OpenAI was giving them $1 billion to use their IP... but it's the other way around.

Sort of. They invested $1B in OpenAI and as part of the deal Sora users get to use (some?) Disney IP for 3 years. The investment suggests Disney is looking to make serious use of AI going forward.

That's cool, I'll be interested to see what people do with it. I haven't played around with AI videos, but I have seen the will smith eating spaghetti improvements so it's definitely getting good.

well, i've said it elsewhere Disney owns the rights to their characters and could if they wanted to make a model based on them and take out the actual artist with nothing stopping them beyond backlash.
