The idea that no good can come from AI is as short sighted an idea as believing AI will bring us a techno-utopia where everyone can be Spielberg. There are a lot of things AI is really good at, in the same way that there are things computers do much better than humans. We absolutely should be approaching it carefully and with intention and not just so that techbro oligarchs can get rich and build bunkers so they can ride out the apocalypse they created, but like any tool it is not in itself evil.

This strikes me as pretty myopic. Just because people are clamoring for clicks on social media by pretending to covet handmaid items does not mean they themselves aren't using AI for a little bit of everything.

Generative ai is not even especially useful. Its smoke and mirrors, a failed experiement being sold to desparately try to make all that sunk cost pay off by ripping off the public.

As @Umbran pointed out, gen ai =/= all types of ai.

As much as it is not the 80s anymore, it isn't the pandemic anymore and people aren't making their own paper and cultivating their own sourdough starters anymore. America is a short sighted consumer culture, so matter what influencers want you to believe (so you can consume the things they are advertising).

Your weird focus on influencers (i literally dont have tiktok and dont follow influencers on IG or youtube, so no.) doesnt actually amount to an argument. It is just buzzwords.

Actual sales of handmade products are rising, as are craft magerials. conent creators (again, a category error if you think all content creators are influencers) are making a living off commissioned pieces, not on selling the work of others.
Many artists i know are selling more commissions and prints than they ever have before.

More and more people despise and are rejecting generative ai. meanwhile, gen ai is the single greatest ecological crisis since industrialization. The progress of decades is being reversed in matters of months. communities are being robbed of clean water and affordable energy like it is 1925.

Supporting gen ai and conflating it with all ai is about as short sighted as it gets.

Technically, perhaps.
But, on the other hand, the other forms of AI aren't actually under debate now. Stepping into arguments with "Well akshually, there are 17 different things we might call AI, and only one of them is baaaad," may not be constructive.

As somekne who supports so-called 'piracy' in the sense of copying and sharing works for free, no.

The theft of IP for commercial use is theft.

Look, GenAI commercial art is bad for art and artists and consumers of art and, well, everyone. But that is a terribly narrow slice of what AI is and can be used for.

Generative ai isnt all ai. Other ai isnt relevant to the discussion.

There are costs, of course, and like everything else that has the power to change the world, if it is under the control of the wealthy it will inevitably cause more harm than good, but that is not a necessary outcome. We -- people -- can demand better of our governments and industries.

Gen ai cannot have better demanded of it. Outside of a few small uses so far outside the stufd being discussed here as to basically be a different topic entirely (most of which can be done with ai tech that was in use before gen ai and doesnt have the IP/water/energy costs), there is no use case where gen ai will ever bring value that even breaks even with its costs.

It is destructive even without the involvement of billionaires. The oligarch class just acts as a accelerant on the wildfire by financing data centers and making backroom deals to get ai inside every damn electrical device imaginable even if it makes using the device noticeably worse (like our cell phones. it cant even be trusted to set reminders without users doublechecking it).

You gotta be joking. A good purpose benefits society as a whole, solves problems in need of solutions, makes life better for most people or for the most vulnerable, etc. Making billionaires richer doesnt qualify.

And us means us. You an oligarch? No? Then you are included.

Provide proof? I mean, if i go steal my neighbor's lawnmower, i am benefiting from theft, but i doubt most of us would catagorize that as "people benefiting" from it in an argument supporting theft. Which gen AI necessarily requires to even advance to where it is. there is no gen ai without theft. Period.

then during the summer there was the fake band that made money with AI generated music via streaming services. Then there's people who making money via patron after making fine tunes of existing models/checkpoints out of various free public models (Stable diffusion/pony/etc)

A lot of folks are also selling what they get from prompting into AI art generators after taking the time to make refinements, along with some winning their state fairs (after it being labeled as AI).

As for disability, i will leave responding to that to the many disabled people who have done so all over the web. Many of them consider touting such stories in defense of gen ai to be act of exploitation of disabled people.

As for the rest, you made my point. People stealing IP and selling it is not a legitimate benefit, any more than me stealing my neighbor's identity to make money is.
