D&D 5E DM help

ManBagel

Messing up everything in DnD since 2019
So I have decided to try and run a DnD adventure since my family is giving a shot at it to see who likes DMing. My brother wants to be a Hexblade warlock which I skimmed through it and I saw a magic item he mostly likely would use. It’s a shapeshifting blade that has a demonic entity in it. It’s released once it destroyed enough souls. The problem is it destroys the blade in the process. Would he lose the magic weapon once the demon is released or could he summon it to him again? When looking at Pact of The Blade it says nothing about if the weapon breaks if you choose to do the 1 hour ritual and bind a weapon as your summon.

If a character had this weapon and it destroyed enough souls to release the demonic entity, then the blade is destroyed. A warlock won't change that. The character would have to find a new weapon to bond to IMO.

One of the fun parts of being a DM is that you can run things according to the rules as others have stated.

Or ... you can just make up something that you think will be fun. Don't get too carried away of course, but if the blade breaks and you think of something fun to do with it, go for it! I don't know your brother so I can't tell you what would be fun but perhaps instead of destroying the souls the PC now absorbs them. Gives him special powers/abilities (usable 1/soul) but there's some terrible cost or risk. Maybe he can continue using the sword but eventually it will destroy his soul as well. Maybe it's now become a cursed item and he has to do something special (beyond just a Remove Curse Spell) to get rid of it.

There are all sorts of options. Not something I would necessarily do because it can be hard to balance but it's your world, your campaign. Rules matter but having fun and telling a cool story matters more.

So the Blade for clarification is a +1 weapon that as a bonus action can shape shift into any other weapon. When you kill 8 creatures with a soul it becomes a +2 weapon. If you kill enough the blade shatters. The item is also cursed where you have to make a DC 15 wisdom saving throw or it switches out the weapon you are using with it, if you use a different weapon.
So my question now is would a hexblade not have to make the wisdom save if he made it disappear with the Pact of The Blade. A new question is would he be able to summon the shards of the blade to his hand once the weapon is broken and if he got someone to use mending on it, would it still have it’s magical properties like shape shifting and attack and damage roll bonus.
