Do Sneak Attacks stack?

reveal

Adventurer
The Chameleon PrC in Races of Destiny can emulate the sneak attack ability of the rogue. Let's say a character was a rogue, so they already have sneak attack. When they emulate the sneak attack ability, do they do more damage? Do they get extra d6?

It does not say in the PrC description that they stack, so I'm not sure.

Usually Sneak Attack from different classes stacks, but this might be a special case.

That's why I'm confused. Usually, if Sneak Attacks do stack, it will say it stacks. This doesn't.

How is it worded? Does it say something like gain the sneak attack of an X level rogue? Or does it say gain sneak attack of xd6?

Here's what the book says:
Mimic Class Feature: At 3rd level, you gain the ability to mimic a certain class feature possessed by other chracters......

[lists other class features]

Sneak Attack (Ex): You can deal an extra 1d6 points of damage per three class levels when flanking an opponent or any time the target would be denied its Dexterity bonus (except on ranged attacks, which must be point-blank to deliver extra damage). See the rogue class feature, page 50 of the Player's Handbook. Treat your rogue level as equal to your class level for the purpose of defeating improved uncanny dodge.

So you are mimicing a class ability even though you already have the ability from that class. I don't think they should stack but the player who wants to make this character thinks they should.

I have to agree with your player mechanically, but I should also say that I hate the Chameleon class with a passion. Come to think of it, a number of the Races of ______ PrC's give me issues (ShadowCraft illusionist and Deepwarden come to mind).

Although interestingly, the Assassin PrC specifically says its SA stacks with other sources of Sneak Attack (but then again, I've seen examples of Dodge bonuses saying they stack, when by rule they already do, so that doesn't prove anything one way or the other either.)

The blackguard, assassin and arcan trickster all specifically state that the bonuses stack if you have levels in rogue.

I don't see why it wouldn't stack based on either rules or balance. Just keep in mind it's class level (i.e. Chameleon PrC level) and not character level. So, the PC gets his rogue levels for +xd6 sneak attack damage and Chameleon PrC levels for +yd6 sneak attack damage. All damage applies (stacks) all the time. If you add the PrC levels to the rogue levels to determine sneak attack damage, at best you'll keep the PC from using 1d6 damage, inconsequential IMO.

Ya, I'm thinking more and more just to let it stack. He's a 6th level Chameleon so he could only do this twice a day. And that's only if he doesn't mimic another feature.
