I don't even really grok how a PbP campaign would work. Are there any good examples around to learn how they're structured?
I'd check out any thread in the "Playing the Game" forum with lots of posts. To run for a while a game has to be good enough to hold players attention. Having said that, my War of the Burning Sky game has been running for a while. It's survived because of perseverance. People drop out and I replace them. People don't post and I NPC their characters until they leave the party and I recruit more. Eventually I have a party full players who are good and want to play. At that point I just need to keep giving them something to respond to.

Or are you asking about something else? Fights are slow, RP is fast, otherwise it's like running in real life.

I have also been without a gaming group for over a year (though I did recently find one, I will be leaving it in September for school), and have been doing pbp for a while now. I don't 100% enjoy pbp, mostly because of the wait times in between posts, but it's working for me.

I think my main issue is that I have so many on the go, I don't really feel connected to any of my characters.

I've had some fun with PbP, though I sometimes had trouble keeping interest or keeping things moving. At the same time, it's sometimes the only way I can get people for a system or adventure I want to run.

Not my favorite, but glad it's an option.
