Dr. Si's Curse of the Crimson Throne - Escape From Old Korvosa

OOC: I mean, if Manachan acted first the snake is fascinated now, right? Because if it is, Ignatius does nothing, but if it is not, some admonishing rays are in order.

OOC: True, in which case the sequence of events is:

Manachan rushes in a punches the snake.
Edmond casts hypnotic pattern.
Snake is fascinated, Mhairi makes her save.
Ignatius waits.
Mhairi can act on her initiative.

OOC: Any reason to kill it? It is fascinated, anyone with animal handling could probably get it down into the chest :) Of course, attacks would kill it, but risking misses for no gain...If needed Edmond can power blow it to snake heaven.

Mhairi takes the opportunity of the distracted snake to look inside the chest.

ooc: If she finds nothing, she'll shut the lid. Otherwise move back a step and shoot the snake with her hand crossbow.

Underneath the snake is a padded inner protecting four small phials. The snake is resting right in top of them, so Mhairi steps back and nails it between the eyes with her hand crossbow. One dead snake.

Surveying the slightly bloody mess of the snake with distaste, Mhairi grasps the carcass with one hand and hauls it out of the chest. "There's some bottles and vials in the bottom here. Any of you magical types want to take a look?" she says, handing them out one by one.

Mhairi takes a moment to reload her crossbow afterwards, before having a thorough search of the inside for a false bottom (or lid), hidden compartments and all the other sneaky things she has heard of.

Ignatius is not sure that the chest should have blocked his magical senses from detecting any auras inside but he humours Mhairi anyway. If they are not magic though the ifrit thinks it might be an idea to try purifying the contents of any toxins.

Mhairi finds no hidden compartments in the chest, but there is an inner lining of lead, which is probably why Ignatius failed to detect magic (as with the other chest with the dubious substance on it). Now that the phials are out of the chest he can tell that all four of them radiate faint conjuration/healing magic, but two phials have a different aura to the other two.

"Ah, I believe they are some sort of healing potions," says the ifrit. "Two different kinds, probably mirroring the different magicks I use to repair ordinary injuries versus more draining ones. Which pair of the potions does what though I am not sure I can say..."

Mhairi looks bemused at their discovery. "Isn't it a bit strange? Hiding healing potions in a locked chest protected by a snake? How would the owner ever get them if they needed to?"

With a sigh, she turned her attention to the third chest - studying it in detail before picking the lock.
