Dragonlance Dragons of Deceit: Check Out the Dragonlance Novel Cover

While we've known about the upcoming Dragonlance novel trilogy since October 2020, Margaret Weis has shared the wraparound cover of the first book in the new Dragonlance novel trilogy, Dragons of Deceit and confirmed the release date August 9th 2022.

As we've noted before, Weis & Hickman are using the brand "Classic Dragonlance" which features the older-style title banner.

We've known about it for a while due to lawsuits and product placeholder pages on Amazon, but Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have just announced their new Dragonlance series of novels! It returns 'the most beloved characters from the original novels', as well as a 'new, strong protagonist'...

Previous information indicated that the second book in the trilogy would be called Dragons of Fate.

Tracy Hickman shared some more information, including the book description which was revealed back in November.

Margaret Weis commented on the logo usage -- "We are so pleased that Wizards of the Coast permitted us to use the classic Dragonlance logo from 1984. The logo was designed by the TSR art director at the time, the late James Roslof, and was hand-painted by Larry Elmore."

1. The main character, who believes she has a destiny, is called Destina. Because of course she is.

2. The first MacGuffin, which is a Device for Time Travelling, is called ... um ... wait, the Device of Time Journeying? Oh boy.

3. And to secure the aptly-named Device of Time Journeying, she gets to encounter "spirited kender Tasslehoff Burrfoot." Please, no.


Look, I'm happy for Dragonlance fans. But this looks to be at the level of writing of the past books- terrible. Except worse, maybe? So, terrible-er. I'm out. Hope it's what the DL fans were waiting for, though!

Eh, I'm fine with it. That's what it was called in the Legends trilogy, and it's basic D&D nomenclature. wand of magic missiles. staff of striking. ring of invisibility. bag of holding. device of time journeying.

Personal preference and all, but-
(1) I prefer books to use a little bit of literary license; and
(2) I think really powerful items should have distinctive names - it's fine to have a wand of magic missiles, but it's not like you'd call the Invulnerable Coat of Arnd the Chainmail of Real Good Protection.
(3) The term device, as in a mechanical contrivance, feels weird when talking about magic.

Anyway, that's just one thing. I hope fans like the new trilogy! Sometimes, you have to be careful what you wish for. I remember that after Gygax left, he wrote some more Gord books ... which were somehow worse than the ones he wrote at TSR. And TSR had Rose Estes write some books ... and ouch.

Sometime you get what you deserve, and sometimes you get it good and hard while reading about the energetic Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

Yeah it sounds a little cheesy but the actual plot line does not sound that bad. I will reserve judgement until more information is available. I consider Joe Abercrombie one of the best current fantasy writers and his books have a little cheese factor as well.

If you really could judge a book by it's cover, it looks promising. That depiction of Solace is absolutely gorgeous.

I'm perfectly happy to see Tasslehoff's return. As I've said before, I've often felt like Tasslehoff and Flint were the characters that felt the most human and relatable in how they reacted to the epic events they were a part of.
