Eberron - Cool or Drool?

All I have to say about Eberron is...

I am so sick of magic robots!

Le sigh. :(

From the previews, all I can really say is that the most distinctive things about Eberron all seem to be things that I don't like. There does also seem to be stuff I don't dislike, if you see what I mean, but nothing that actually grabs my attention and makes me excited.

So ... eh. Color me apathetic.

So far the only setting that blew me away when I saw it was Midnight and that was because it was totally unlike any other D&D setting I'd ever seen. It was a real departure from the norm. It definitely was NOT another Forgotten Realms/Greyhawk clone. Eberron just doesn't seem different ENOUGH for me to get excited over it. I'll check it out when it comes out though but so far I don't see enough to make me want to buy it.

My problem with Eberron, it doesn't seem to have anything that sets it apart from the masses. Yeah, the warforged, first time I heard the name, It didn't even pique my interest. After a little bit, yeah, they kinda interested me, but the curiosity quickly war off. And I've always loved dinosaurs, but why have them as mounts and beasts of burden when you can make things like warforged (yeah, I already know, they've shut down the warforged factories). To me it sounds like a modern Hollywood production, thats all flash and no substance.

Side Note: Yeah, I'm waiting impatiently for the Iron Kingdoms Campaign stuff to come out. Now there's a setting with flavor you can taste.

Someday soon you will go home to visit Mom and Dad, but Dad will be gone, and Mom will smile, and say, "Eberron is your new daddy," and Eberron will walk out smoking a pipe and say, "Give me a hug, son."

And you better hug Eberron, man. You better hug Eberron.

My biggest problem with Eberron is that it seems like standard D&D with the volume nob turned up a bit (if you read about Monte Cook's Ptolus campaign, you've heard this before).

There's not a distinctive theme. So there's a high amount of magic... well, that's D&D, isn't it? The reason settings like Ravenloft and Darksun are interesting is because the basic D&D rules are transplanted into a completely different and, in a sense, more restrictive world. One where some of the rules actually have to be limited or, in some cases, won't even work.

In Eberron, all the rules apply. So, what's changed?

The Lightning Rail, dude! The Lightning Rail!

As far as I can tell, and I've looked into it a bit

Dude, I just spent *45 minutes* browsing your site. I want to thank you for all the work that obviously went into it. As an Eberron fanboy-to-be :) I really appreciated what you did there.

Peace!

I think how good it is going to be depends a lot on how popular it is, and because of that, how many supplements are produced for it. Right now, it doesn't intrigue me, but I think with some additional material, it just might. Whether or not additional material happens, or if it just kinda dissappears... well, that's yet to be determined.

And he will be wearing the clothes patched together from other settings just re-labled, re-packaged, and re-hashed. ;)
