[Epic] Fun with Permanent Emanation

This neat little feat makes an emanation spell (centered on you) permanent, undispellable, and dismissible/restorable at will (free action).

First a couple of questions:

- One of the prerequisites is "ability to cast the spell to be made permanent". Does this include using Limited Wish or Wish to cast a specific spell that is not (yet) on your spell list? This seems somewhat moot, as these spells could be used to scribe a scroll with just about any spell. (Well, ok, you have to be able to use the scroll, too, i.e. arcane vs divine)

So, could a Wizard use Wish to use Antilife Shell as a Permanent Emanation?

- If you are an Archmage with Mastery of Shaping, can you "alter" the emanation AoE as if you were casting a spell?

Now the fun part... Creative uses of the feat.

Adrenaline Surge (Drd 2, Sor/Wiz 2, MotW p82): For a summoning type, +4 Strength to summoned creatures is interesting.

Antilife Shell (Animal 6, Clr 6, Drd 6, RSRD SpellListII & SpellsA-B): Whoa, stay out you baddies!

Antimagic Field (Clr 8, Magic 6, Protection 6, Sor/Wiz 6, RSRD SpellListII & SpellsA-B): Kinda self-defeating, really. Activate the Antimagic Field and it suppresses your Permanent Emanation. My head hurts.

False Vision (Brd 5, Sor/Wiz 5, Trickery 5, RSRD SpellListII & SpellsF-G): Big BBEG trying to scry you? No problem! Show him a nice bouquet of flowers, with a little elevator music instead... "Stay tuned, we'll be right back!"

Globe of Invulnerability (Sor/Wiz 6, RSRD SpellListII & SpellsF-G): It's immobile, but bringing this up or tearing it down as a free action? You bet!

Repulsion (Clr 7, Protection 7, Sor/Wiz 6 RSRD SpellListII & SpellsP-R): Your colleagues will probably be annoyed with you when you bring it up, but keeps the baddies away. Especially Fighter types with their poor Will saves.

Taldock's Spell Inhibitor (Protection 6, Sor/Wiz 6, R&R): This large area emanation makes all spells cast in the area at their minimum level (e.g. Fireball is 5d6 regardless of caster level)... Those high-level casters will really hate you...

Zone of Revelation (Clr 3, Sor/Wiz 4, MotP p40): No more sneaking up on you invisible or ethereal!

Zone of Truth (Clr 2, Pal 2, RSRD SpellListII & SpellsT-Z): Say no lies!

The full list is below, if it interests anyone. :D

Only the ELH would have such a hideously broken feat...

We have something similar, but they're called bound spells. As in, the spell is bound to the subject's life force - as long as the creature lives, the spell remains in effect. A dispel magic suppresses it for 1d4 rounds, but a disjunction will destroy it (on a failed save). It's always active, and requires a ritual to set into place.

So, could a Wizard use Wish to use Antilife Shell as a Permanent Emanation?

Going by the strictest reading of the text, no. The caster must KNOW the spell - either have it in his memory or in his spellbook, or be able to pray for it.

Use the epic spell seed Ward to make yourself permanently immune to Antimagic field. :]

Krafen, in the Exodus we were faced with that very possibility - and we ruled that if you were warded FROM the spell antimagic field, you could not then also be the source of such an emanation simultaneously.

Also remember, AMF gets a cster leel check to suppress any Epic spell that comes within it - even a Ward that renders it's subject(s) immune to AMF.

Close, but its not a caster level check. Its a dispel check: d20+20. Thus if you're much higher than 20th level, the odds of the AMF dropping your ward are extremely slim.

Also, many of those spells are not viable targets for the feat.

Designate any one of the character’s spells whose area is an emanation from the character.

If the spell doesn't emanate from the character, it can't be made permanent.

I'e tried to filter the list to only include the ones emanating from the caster. Can you indicate which ones you feel wouldn't be allowed?

Don't forget "End to Strife" from the BoED. That's my personal favorite.

There's just something compelling about saying, "enough!" and having it backed by major subdual damage whenever you feel like.

I doubt I would allow it either. It never came up in the one epic game I ran as no one took Epic Spellcasting.

I don't have the wording of Ward in front of me, but from what I remember it allows the spell(s) Warded against to pass through the ward and the Warded creature can cast the spell(s) Warded against. It looked to me like someone with a Ward against Antimagic field could still cast the spell and the spell would still work, it just would not suppress magic within the area of the Ward. By extension, it seems the Permanent Emanation would work the same way.
