Epic Question #1

Nightstorm

First Post
Ok so say Im 20th level wizard than become a 1st level Fighter(21st character level) . When I get the bonus feat for fighter, can I pick a figher epic feat(that I meet requierments for ofcouse)? than at 2nd get another (plus the ones I get for being the epic character levels)? This is how I read it in the book.

You read it correctly.

"When your single-class epic character gains a level, you may choose to increase the level of your current class or pick up a new class at first level......When you have to choose from a list of bonus feats in your second class, you can also choose from the bonus epic feats described for each specific class below." --ELH, page 8.

You are hitting 21st level, so you get a bonus feat for your character level... and since you are 21st level or above, this feat can be epic. However... your fighter class level isn't epic, so the bonus feats from that class cannot be chosen from the epic list.

You are much better off staying a straight Wiz. as they get class bonus feats every 3 levels after 21st. And these can also be chosen from the epic list.

Just an FYI--Andy Collins (and possibly the Sage) have said this passage is an error that got past the editors, and that you cannot take Epic fighter feats as your bonus feats until you hit Fighter 20.

Of course, until the official errata comes out I suppose a lot of people are just going to use p. 8 from the book instead...

Andy Collins just said he would rule that a 20th level character who added a level of fighter should not be able to take epic feats as bonus feats. When specified that his ruling directly contradicted the text he grew conspicuously silent. Until official errata comes out his comment is effectively no different than Monte Cook's alternate Ranger. House rules, even from individuals on the design team, are just that.

In all honesty.... I'd say page 8 is right on.

Say you are a spellcaster, you take 10 levels in a PrC (one that is not in the DMG).

So when you hit 21st level, you decide to raise your "base" spellcasting class to level 11. This character should not get a bonus feat?

Admittedly, this is a "dual class" character (since the PrC), but the point is still valid.

In my opinion, all feats gained at 21st+ level can be either epic or "normal" feats.

Personally I agree with you Cloudgatherer, a Wiz20/Ftr1 is still a much better fighter than a simple Ftr1. I also believe almost every Epic Feat has epic prereqs, so there isn't really a balance issue allowing the fighter to select from the ELH for his bonus feats provided he qualifies IMHO.

Kai Lord, it was on the WotC boards (if I recall) that I read about the editing/printing oversight, mentioned by one of the authors of the book (or quoted by someone else). Admittedly the source of this info is suspect, but people will follow the book or house rule it as they wish anyway (me included). :)
