The dragonborn puts his mug down on the bar, slides his chest out from under the stool, hefts it over his shoulder, and walks cautiously over to the table where the salty dwarf is sitting.

Damien eyes the new patron, he can already smell the scent of sand and old rum on the dwarf.

He slowly ambles over to the dwarf and engages him in conversation.

The tavern door swings open. No-one is at first visible. Then the sharp tone of a stick striking a taut drumhead resounds twice, and the figure of a woman steps into the doorway. Her high cheekbones and thin, high-set eyebrows lend her an air of aristocratic beauty. Her eyes are closely set, but wide open with wonder. Her straight black hair and her skin tone show that she is a native of the Kingdom of Jade, the fine robes she wears are in the style worn in that land. The robe is white, with an orange lining visible at the fringes, and decorated with a delicately embroidered floral pattern in pale gold.

Tied on a strap over her shoulder is a small hourglass-shaped drum--obviously the instrument heard earlier. In her hands is a small wooden transverse flute.

She takes three steps in, pausing in mid-step, looks to the right, then to the left, then continues forward two more steps, bows her head then raises in back up to level. She then begins speaking in a lilting sing-song style.

"Hú Lí is here!" She places the flute to her lips and blows two high keening notes. "Ready to entertain!" She pipes a long rattling tone, then advances into the room, gliding swiftly and smoothy. "Skilled with flute and drum! Hú Lí knows songs and stories." She steps forward one step, then turns her head slowly to the right. "And also secrets!" Her head snaps back and she shuffles rapidly around in a circle, trilling her flute wildly. Suddenly she stops still in mid-flight. "Hú Lí can play and sing the songs the old blind women know!" She straightens up and plays a low note, then a higher one on her flute. "Hú Lí can tell of the monk and the tea kettle, and knows many stories of children born of peaches and bamboo!" Holding her flute in her left hand, and squeezing the drum underneath her arm, she gives a single sharp tap on its head, and speaks again more softly. "Hú Lí knows of betrayals of lovers by great noble lords, leading to sorrow, and to death!"

She returns her flute to her lips, and plays a long trill, starting slowly, and growing faster and faster, then suddenly leaping up to a high steady tone that echoes in the room after she finishes.

"Hú Lí is no stranger to peril either!" she says. She takes two steps forward. "Hú Lí has seen the serpent coiled to strike!" She takes two more steps. "Hú Lí has seen the tiger on its hunt!" She takes a single step. "Hú Lí has seen the demons that eat souls!" She blows a weird, unearthly melody and steps forward sharply. "Peril! Secrets! Stories! Songs! Hú Lí is here! Ready to entertain!"

[sblock=secrets!]A keen observer may note that Hú Lí has on some sort of armor under her robes.[sblock=perception 26]An even keener observer might spot--just once--what appears to be a bushy black tail peeping out from underneath her robe.[/sblock][/sblock][sblock=ooc]Hú Lí is here![/sblock]

"Harold" twists around to listen to the newcomer's introduction, then eyes the other people in the tavern, wondering which of the dregs of humanity and other races present in this dive could possibly have requested such a classy entertainer.

"Are you certain that you are in the right place?" he asks Hu Li, in his rich, melodious voice. "I am afraid you will find a rather dull, unappreciative audience here, likely to become bewildered by anything more sophisticated than clowns walking into walls while accompanied by fart noises"--the kenku receives a few sharp, angry glares from the other tavern customers, which he ignores--"but, for me at least, it is a pleasure. My name is Smith, Harold Smith." He looks curiously at Hu Li's robe, but

sees nothing to remark on (nothing that a talking bird-man would find unusual, anway).

Hú Lí frowns at Mr. "Smith", and thinks for a second. Then her face brightens.

"If that is the type of thing that they like here," she says, "there are some songs and stories. Including the one. . ." she leans in very close to the Kenku and whispers for a minute.

As "Harold" listens to Hú Lí, his eyes at first widen in shock, but then he bursts out with a loud guffaw. Quickly suppressing his laughter, he says a little primly, "I suppose that might go over well enough. It's not exactly to my taste, of course, unless perhaps it were set to music.... Hm."

A small elf, from the Kingdom of Jade from his looks, enters the tavern. He seems to be looking for someone, and finally joins the group seated at a table near the back. This one is sorry he is late, Kaz says to "Harold" and the group, sitting down. This one had some religious rights to Lady Mireva to perform in honor of our fallen comrade...

His voice breaks off, the death of his friend still seems to effect him greatly.

OOC: Kaz, level 6 avenger ready to go. :)

A few minutes behind Kaz, a man steps through the door of the tavern and immediately stands out. Firstly noticed by all is his discomfort at even being inside the establishment, soon after the rest of him settles into an out of place figure. His clothing is immaculate. His blond hair may have had an hour spent of accomplishing just the perfect ratio of groomed to tousled. His hands are callous free and manicured. He gives the impression of having never truly worked a day in his life. It’s as all of this assembles itself in the patrons’ minds that they realize he’s here to hire adventurers.

He approaches the bar and speaks quietly for a moment with its tender. The barkeep shrugs and gestures to the room at large. Sighing, the man turns to face those assembled. “I am Reeve, seneschal to Merchant Lord Rustavich. I am here to collect persons with a less than reasonable self-preservation instinct and a sense of discretion to perform a delicate task for my master. Would there be any such here?”

A moment later he moves to stand by the table nearest the fire, waiting for others to approach.

OOC: This is recruiting for an adventure for PCs level 5-7.
