D&D 5E Favored Enemy needs a simple Damage +2

The point of a ranger is he can fight a sea troll with a spear whereas a fighter and paladin gurgle "I'M DROWNING!" because he can cast water breathing and can flank him with a shark.

Correction: conjure animals lets you summon four reek sharks.
Reek sharks? Those sound nasty. Do aquatic troglodytes use them as mounts?

I agree on the first part.

The second point. Making Favored enemies a focus is bad. The Ranger either comes of as overpowered (1st edition) or very weak (3rd edition). It also contradicts the first part. If favored enemy is strong, then it is DM dependent. That's why It's a moderate skill boost.

You can't have ranger have a strong FE bonus and not be DM dependent.

Man, a Bard can emulate a Ranger archer and get better.

A Bard learn Conjure Volley, Tree Strider and Swift Quiver in level 10 (Level 17 Ranger Spells) and more slots to use.
This is broken for the Bard and humiliating for Ranger.

Favored Enemy

Beginning at 1st level, you have significant experience studying, tracking, hunting, fighting and even talking to a certain type o f enemy. Choose a type o f favored enemy: aberrations, beasts, celestials, constructs, dragons, elementals, fey, fiends, giants, monstrosities, oozes, plants, or undead. Alternatively, you can select two races o f humanoid (such as gnolls and orc s) as favored enemies. You have +2 in damage rolls against them and advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track your favored enemies, as well as on Intelligence checks to recall information about them. When you gain this feature, you also learn one language o f your choice that is spoken by your favored enemies, if they speak one at all. You choose one additional favored enemy, as well as an associated language, at 6th and 14th level. As you gain levels, your choices should reflect the types of monsters you have encountered on your adventures.

And Beast Master archetype need a rebuild.

If you think of the ranger as a damage dealer, you will always be disappointed with the ranger. You wold make yourself happy until the ranger becomes broken and wrecks the game (I'm seen and read about this a lot in 3rd)

Multiple classes are better damage dealers.
Multiple classes are better front liners.
Multiple classes are better explorers.
Multiple classes are better sneaks.
Mutliple classes are better animal and plant talkers.

But the ranger is the best combination of all these.

Nope, Ranger in Next is a combination of Fighter + Druida + Rogue.
He tries to embrace the world but is not good enough.

Rogue is a city explorer.
Ranger is a natural explorer.

Rogue is more effective in their specialty than the Ranger in his specialty.

More:
Paladin's Find Steed spell humbles Beast Master archetype.
A Bard "ranger" humiliates the Ranger class.

I don't know who's playing the ranger in your group.
Did he or she read the ranger handbook?

Find Steed sucks. The only think it has over an animal companion is you can resummon it with just a 2nd level spell. A beast master's companions is a lot stronger and has a lot more uses.

And bard's brokenness is not a hit on the ranger. The bard is just crazy. But The bard cannot duplicate ranger until level 14th and it can only be a 75% ranger. Fewer HP. Less damage. Lower AC. Lower Wisdom. Lower Dex. Lower Str. Sacrificing your brokeness to mimic the ranger. And you have to take the war college.

I'm playing with the Ranger for five months, am level 11.

I will explain my comparison with these 3 classes:

Fighting Styles (Fighter)
Land's Stride (Druid)
Summon Spells (Druid)
Nature Spells (Druid)
Vanish (limited Rogue's Cunning Action)
Feral Senses (like Rogue's Blindsenses)
Hunter's Evasion (Rogue)
Hunters Uncanny Dodge (Rogue)
Foes Slayer (like Precision Attack manouver - Fighter)
Hit Dice D10 (Fighter)

among others.

1- Find Steed improves your speed.
2- It's a level 2 spell.
3- There is not a real animal.
4- If you die can be invoked again in the next turn (no need to wait 8 hours).
5- Do not sacrifice your archetype.
6- Depending on the DM you can invoke other mounts beyond horse (a friend invokes a Grifon with higher slots).
